Community Center is back after a three-year hiatus

Delay was caused due by pandemic and renovations

The Mantua Township Community Center on East Mercer Avenue – forced to close because of COVID and renovations – has reopened after a three-year delay.

The reopening was kicked off by a dinner for seniors – who also attend programs there – that drew more than 100 people on June 13, according to the township Facebook page.

“Two words to describe the dinner,” noted the Facebook post. “A blast.”

The event saw meals provided by Mission BBQ and attendance by Mayor Robert Zimmerman and Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto.

Each attendee received flags in honor of Flag Day, which was celebrated this past Wednesday,” said Zimmerman, referring to the June 14 holiday. “Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and I attended the dinner. It was great to see so many friends and finally catch up in conversation after COVID and the renovation delays at our center.”

Another senior luncheon will be held in the fall, though a date has yet to be determined.

The community center is also part of the Gloucester County Nutrition Program, through which the township provides seniors in Mantua and Gloucester County with daily lunches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as a chance to connect with other people. The meals – designated for those 60 and up – are $1.25 and require advance registration by calling (856) 468-4773.

Other senior events on tap include a Sept. 13 concert by the Bonsal Blues, a local blues group  based in Woodbury. It consists of concert and marching bands, a color guard and an 18-piece swing group, according to the Bonsai Blues website. A time has yet to be determined.

Seniors can find information on activities geared to them at the Mantua Township website.
