Mantua Mayor’s Message for week of June 18

We’d like to thank township employee, Leah Clemenson for single handedly organizing this program. Leah is honored to help lead this exciting initiative, which holds a profound significance in her personal life. In June of 2022, her younger brother Matthew, just 12-years-old, received a devastating diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Leah advises, “Despite Matthew’s young age, he has displayed unwavering strength and resilience, embodying the spirit of a true warrior. However, even the most courageous warriors need their weapons, and in Matthew’s case, his weapon is blood.”

Our blood drive goal is 74 donors, which equates to about 46 units of blood.  To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-REDCROSS or go to RedCrossBlood.org.  In the “Find a Blood Drive” box at the top right, enter the code: Mantuatownship.

Mayor’s Message Volume #10 will feature Leah Clemenson.  She’ll discuss the blood drive and Matthew’s heartfelt battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.  Look for this video over the next few weeks on our social media platforms and on our township website at mantuatownship.com.

Police Department Update:

  • The department is currently finishing-up a hiring process for police officer positions in order to fill vacancies resulting from attrition. We anticipate approving these new hires at an upcoming township committee meeting this summer.
  • Chief Darren White reported that an elderly woman recently had several thousand dollars
stolen from her after she fell for a law enforcement telephone scam. The caller apparently identified himself as the “Chief of Police” in order to swindle the woman. Our police department, and for that matter, local law enforcement does not conduct telephone solicitations. Please do not provide personal or financial information to anyone over the telephone. If you have a question or concern please contact our police department at (856) 589-0911.
  • Chief White praised the recent work of his detective bureau and that of the SLEO I Officers at the department.
  • Please remember to lock your car doors and to park in well-lit areas overnight. Burglars continue to prey on those who leave car doors unlocked and valuables inside.
  • Did you know our police department has a police explorer program for individuals 14-20 years of age who are interested in law enforcement as a potential career? This is a great opportunity to get involved in our community and to learn about law enforcement.  For more information please contact Officer Adam Hasselman at (856) 468-1920 ex.1550 or at ahasselman@mantuatownship.com or Officer Bruce Shaw at (856) 468-1920 ex.1554 or at bshaw@mantuatownship.com.

The Mantua Township Historical Commission is pleased to present the Summer 2023 issue of their Quarterly Bulletin.  In this edition they present articles on the birth of Centre City, the rise and fall of K-mart, and Edwards Run and its historic significance. This is their fifth bulletin. If you are interested in reading this issue or any of the prior issues, please visit the Mantua Township website at https://mantuatownship.com/our-history/ or send them an email request at mthc1977@gmail.com.

We’d like to thank the entire Historical Commission and especially Chairman Jeff Gellenthin and Vice-Chairman Herb Hood for their on-going efforts in educating our residents and significantly helping to preserve the rich history of our wonderful community. I personally have learned so much from their volunteer work and am truly grateful!

Upcoming Township Meetings and Events:

  • Saturday, July 1 is the next Convenience Center Drop Off at our Public Works facility between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

This past week, June 21 marked the first official day of summer.  We’d like to wish everyone a very safe and pleasant summer.  We’re hopeful you’ll be making joyous memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto and myself, and the entire Township Committee – we look forward to continuing our service with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.
