Mantua Mayor’s Message for week of June 4

Mantua’s Big Night Out was canceled for Thursday, June 8 (tonight) due to the potentially unhealthy residual smoke from the Canadian wildfires. This event has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 14 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Chestnut Branch Park. With this in mind, weather services suggest that we limit exposure and time spent outdoors, especially for those with pre-existing respiratory and health related issues that can be exacerbated. Please be safe and monitor news outlets for updated information in our area as we approach the weekend.

We’ve received recent inquiries regarding the recent DRPA letters sent to some residents situated along the proposed GCL line. Residents have asked, whether or not, they should allow workers to enter their private property. On Monday, June 5, I received the following electronic mail from Rick England, Manager – Government Relations from the DRPA (Delaware River Port Authority):

Dear Mayor,

This communication is to notify you of a letter that 55 property owners along the Glassboro Camden Line are in the process of receiving.  The correspondence from South Jersey Transit Partners details the upcoming need to perform cultural resource surveys.

These surveys will include consultants entering each property to conduct Architectural and Archaeological studies that may include digital photography, hand excavations with shovels and screens, geophysical studies, and/or mechanical excavation.

Please note that no property will be entered, and no work will be performed without permission from the property owner.

Below you will find the number of properties in each community along the GCL as well as a copy of the correspondence.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Mayor’s Message Volume #9 features our VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Lawson-Cox Post 7679 and longtime Chairman, Joe Heitman. Heitman discusses our local VFW Post here in Mantua, and how they help veterans in our community and some of the programs and events that they organize each year.  Look for this video over the next few weeks on our social media platforms and on our township website at mantuatownship.com.

Our police department has announced that the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office is again co-sponsoring the annual Juneteenth event this year.  It will be held at Stewart Park in Woodbury on Saturday, June 17 from 12:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., followed by a concert.

We ask that you only place bulk trash items at the curb during our scheduled monthly bulk weeks.  Bulk trash is for residential household waste only.  Pick-up is the first full week of every month, Monday through Friday on your scheduled trash day.  Placing bulk items curbside during off-weeks creates a hazard and is aesthetically unpleasing to our community, especially during the summer months.  We ask for your cooperation so that we can keep our township looking tidy.

Update on the proposed new Super WaWa at Mt. Royal Road and Rt. 45.  The final plans have been submitted to the township, and this project is awaiting county approval.  The anticipated construction date is early 2024.

Upcoming Township Meetings and Events:

  • The next Township Committee Meeting is Monday, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Township Building.
  • Thursday, June 15 7 p.m. is the next Fire District Meeting to be held at the Sewell Fire   House.
  • Saturday, June 10 is the next Convenience Center Drop Off at our Public Works facility between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto, myself and the entire Township Committee – we look forward to continuing our service with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.
