Adult Center for Transition award funded by memorial endowment
Part of the mission at Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ) is to train and educate residents for the job market.
Its Adult Center for Transition (ACT) focuses on adults, one of whom could earn an annual $500 scholarship that will first be awarded in the fall.
The award is funded by a $10,000 endowment created in memory of their fathers by Gloucester County residents Brian W. Jones – president and CEO of the First National Bank of Elmer – and his wife, Joanne Katzen-Jones. It is open to ACT students at the Rowan campuses in Gloucester and Cumberland counties.
Attendees at a recent ceremony to acknowledge the memorial scholarship were RCSJ President Frederick Keating, the Joneses, Rowan staff and several ACT students.
“The William H. Jones and Julian S. Katzen Memorial Scholarship is named for our fathers, who valued education as a key element of both individual and social development,” said Brian Jones and his wife.
“Our fathers were both gentle and kind souls and always sacrificed personal rewards for the benefit of their families.”
The scholarship recipient will demonstrate the characteristics of those fathers, including concern for all, lightening the burden of others and safeguarding those with special needs, according to Rowan spokesperson Renee Post.
Eligible scholarship candidates will be second- or third-year ACT students who demonstrate substantial growth in several areas, including academics, self-advocacy and self-determination, independence, social skills and or employment.
ACT enables students to learn about employment preparedness, self-advocacy training and access to community resources. They also participate in the Employment First Program, which utilizes person-centered planning and consists of an intake and career assessment. It also offers tips on resume writing, job interviews and career development with the assistance of a job coach.
