Competition will begin at the Christ Episcopal Church
The town of Riverton – with its scenic views of the Delaware River, 18th-century mansions along Bank Avenue and wide, tree-lined streets – will welcome professional riders at its bicycle competition on Sunday, June 11.
The 12th annual Historic Riverton Criterium and USA Cycling competition will begin at the Christ Episcopal Church on Fourth and Main streets at 1 p.m. There will be children’s races for ages 7 to 9 at 4:30 p.m., and a special Beach Cruiser Blitz one-lap race for adults at 2:30, according to organizer Carlos Rogers and the race website.
Adults can only compete with a single-gear bicycle, and a helmet and signed release are required. Those watching the race will find food trucks; music by DJ Blake Tart; and T-shirts, cowbells and posters on sale.
“We’ll be celebrating America this year as the 12th annual Historic Riverton Criterium benefits the Riverton Fourth of July Committee and the events they promote during the holiday,” noted Rogers, who thanked the @theheadsofstate graphic group for the race poster design.
He also thanked sponsors who include Advantage Auto/Driving School, Barlow Chevrolet, Bicycle Therapy, Colonial Concepts and Design, Compass Real Estate/The McDonnell Group, FX Duffy Accountants and Weber Funeral Home.
One lap of the criterium route is sanctioned by USA Cycling and .8 miles long, with six turns. It is considered a technical flat and fast course.
The first professional women’s race will kick off at 1 p.m. and riders will do laps of 15 miles. The first men’s race will follow, with laps of 25 miles. Other races will follow throughout the afternoon.
The course itself starts at Christ Episcopal and goes up Main Street, proceeds left onto Fifth Street, heads left at Fulton Street and onto Fourth Street, goes right onto Cinnaminson Street, takes a left onto Second Street and then heads left onto Main Street up to the church.
