Harrison Township shred day offers shredding to residents

At Harrison shredding event, 100% of it will be recycled

Harrison Township. Documents eligible for shredding include those with confidential material such as bank documents and old tax records.

The Harrison Township Environmental Commission will host its spring shred day for residents on Saturday, June 10.

The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harrison municipal building, where residents can shred personal documents that contain confidential material, such as bank documents and old tax records.

Shred day happens twice a year. The fall event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23.

“We expect anywhere from 100 to 150 people to drive by,” said committeeman Jeff Jacques, liaison to the environmental commission. “We usually shred between two- and three-tons worth of paper.”

The free admission is meant to serve as an incentive for people to participate, according to Jacques, as 100 percent of the paper provided will be recycled.

“Some think it’s counterintuitive to do it for free,” he acknowledged. “But we get more people to come out this way and it helps pay for the truck.”

Residents are asked to bring papers in either boxes or 33-gallon trash bags.  They are allowed a maximum of four boxes or four trash bags of paper per car. While paper clips and staples are permitted, residents are asked not to bring plastic bags, metal binders and binder clips because they can’t be shredded.

An operator from the company DocuVault Delaware Valley will handle the shredding and handling of documents. Volunteers from a local Boy Scout pack and other groups within the township will assist drivers upon arrival.

The shredding event is held in partnership with the Harrison Township Committee and the Gloucester County Board of Commissioners.

The township will also distribute free reusable bags to use in stores in lieu of banned plastic bags.

“It’s a good event,” said Jacques.
