The Harrison Township Recreation Commission will host a summer theater camp at American Legion Post 452 beginning next month for kids 7 years old and up who will end the sessions by performing Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

“I introduce myself and Eileen (Goodman-Tharp) (tries) to ease the tension between us and the kids,” said camp co-director Jamie Wagner. “We try to make it more fun for the community and put our own spin on the show.”

The first sessions will take place from Monday, June 19, through Thursday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The weeks of Monday, July 3 and Monday, July 10 will have sessions only on Wednesday, July 7, and Thursday, July 8, during the same hours.

Performances of The Little Mermaid will take place at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School auditorium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday July 13. Campers will prepare with help from Wagner and Goodman-Tharp, who are both teachers.

“Kids audition by dancing and reading from the script,” Wagner explained. “Anyone can get the lead part in the play. They don’t have to be returning actors. Some new kid could blow us away and get the lead part. The camp is good for beginners.”

The camp requires online registration on SignUpGenius. Its cost of $375 covers all aspects of the sessions. Only one child can be registered at a time and there are no discounts for siblings. Registrations are non-refundable.

While there is no registration deadline, the camp has a 50-child maximum, with 17 slots already reserved.
