Mayor’s Message for week of May 7

We’re saddened to learn that officer Robert “Bobby” Shisler of the Deptford Township Police Department passed away this past Sunday. In honor of Shisler, and our law enforcement community, we ask you to consider placing a blue bulb in your front porch light to honor and respect this fallen hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Update on GCL (Gloucester Camden Line):

False:

  • It is absolutely untrue that the township committee is unwilling to set-up an informational meeting for residents with the DRPA (Delaware River Port Authority) regarding the proposed GCL project.

Facts:

  • The township committee has already set-up and publicized an independently run public meeting by the DRPA that was held by way of Zoom back on May 5, 2021.
  • The township committee recently reached out to the DRPA about scheduling another independently run public meeting by the DRPA, and this was their May 8 response via electronic mail:

“Thank you for reaching out to the DRPA on behalf of your constituents.

Community involvement is and has been a vital part of the GCL project from the start. The GCL project team has hosted more than 100 public outreach and stakeholder meetings to date, and we look forward to coming to Mantua.

“Please understand that the GCL project is in the early phase of Preliminary Engineering Design (PED). As the PED continues to progress, the project team anticipates scheduling additional meetings in fall 2023. At that time, the project team will provide updated information on important items such as quiet zones, property needs and coordination efforts between the project and Mantua. The project will be further advanced and make for a much more productive meeting.

“As an additional resource, we have launched a comprehensive website (www.glassborocamdenline.com) that places all of the latest project information and resources right at the fingertips of everyone interested in the project.

“The Project Team looks forward to working with you and your constituents. Thank you for reaching out.”

At this past Monday’s township committee meeting, we passed an amendment to our ATV ordinance. We tightened up the ordinance to provide our police department with better legislation for enforcement purposes. One thing in particular that should be noted:

It is now unlawful to operate an ATV within 500 feet of the property line of any property zoned “residential” unless the property is owned by the operator, or the property owner has permission.

In other words, stay clear from any private property that isn’t yours, or where you have not been granted permission. The police have been tasked with strictly enforcing violations.

My special guest on the next “Mayor’s Message” video is committeewoman Eileen Lukens.  Lukens will help me showcase our beautiful Chestnut Branch Park and the recent upgrades at the park. Look for this video over the next few days on our social media platforms and on our township website at mantuatownship.com.

Committeeman John Legge and I recently had the distinct pleasure of meeting with our good friend Joyce Rodak. Many know that Joyce lost her husband John on 9/11. Please support Joyce and her efforts to help others through JR’s Angels in John’s memory. You can get more information on how to help or donate at www.jrsangels.org.

Upcoming township meetings and events:

  • Our police department will have car seat safety technicians on-hand to help residents with the installation process on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Sewell Fire House.
  • Tuesday, May 16 at 5 p.m. is the next Municipal Utilities Authority meeting to be held at the Township Administration Building.
  • Tuesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. is the next Land Use Board meeting to be held at the Township Administration Building.
  • Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m. is the next Fire District Meeting to be held at the Sewell Fire House.

Happy Mother’s Day to all those special women in our community who have one of the most important jobs on our planet. We thank you for all that you do throughout the year and celebrate you on May 14.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto, myself and the entire Township Committee, we look forward to continuing our service with honesty, integrity and trustful leadership.
