Elderly woman rescued after trapped in car following crash

No injuries reported

Mantua Township Fire Department. An elderly woman was left trapped in her car after accidentally driving it into the garage, prompting the Mantua Fire Department to come in and extract her from the vehicle.

The Mantua Fire Department had to free an elderly woman trapped in her car after she crashed it into her garage at her home in the unit block of Meadow Court during the afternoon of April 12.

There was no other damage reported to neighboring units or vehicles within the vicinity of the accident scene, with exception of the damage to the woman’s vehicle and garage.

There was also no other damage to the rest of the woman’s home. The woman, whose name has not been made public, walked away uninjured and no one else was injured from the incident.

Fire Chief Brian Hauss was one of the reporting firefighters and gave details on the crash.

Unfortunately, the elderly woman who resided at the residence in the unit block of Meadow Court, put her car in drive, when she meant to put her car in reverse and drove through her garage door,” he said. “She was trapped inside of her vehicle, uninjured.”

Mantua firefighters first had to remove the garage door, which sat above the vehicle, due to the impact of the crash. The garage was small making it difficult for the fire department to reach anything beyond the rear half of the vehicle. Only a certain number of firefighters could get access to the garage at a time, according to Hauss.

Firefighters were able to gain access to the driver through the rear hatch of the vehicle and were able to extract her out of the vehicle as her family members gathered anxiously awaiting her rescue.

The fire department informed residents about the crash by posting a summary and photos on their Facebook page.
