Deptford Library’s Science Saturday teaches kids science through activities

Librarian demonstrates how its areas relate to each other

Deptford Free Public Library. Free Science Saturday classes are available to children of all ages with or without a library card.

The Deptford library is hosting a monthly event called Science Saturday that aims to help kids better understand the subject.

The free program was introduced last year and is taught by children’s librarian Susann Kaback, who incorporates discussions of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

Science Saturdays show children how the STEAM areas interplay with each other in real life,” Kaback explained. “We have done experiments about inertia, density, the behavior of light, and learned about acids and bases, to name a few.

“I hope the children will develop an interest in the STEAM areas and have fun doing the experiments with me.”

The classes are held on the second Saturday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m.  unless otherwise noted on the library’s calendar or the Monthly Minute printout. Each one focuses on a different topic.

No registration is required for Science Saturday, which is available to children of all ages with or without a library card. All materials are provided.

Other related library activities for kids include a Lego club offered twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4 p.m., a weekly kindergarten-through-second- grade story time on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and a Saturday Make It/Take It art class once a month at 11 a.m.

Most of the children’s programs are hosted by Kaback, who has nearly 50 years of experience and has worked with hundreds of kids during that time.

“I have been here for 49 years,” Kaback noted. “I love what I do and all my children who come to the library for any program.”
