The shelter’s cat to kitten ratio is 0 for December through February, 1 to 1 from March through May, 6 to 1 from June to August and 3 to 1 from September through November.
The Animal Welfare Association (AWA) is gearing up for a busy spring.
The shelter will host an all-you-can-shred event on Saturday, April 1, at The Tap Group.
For $40, participants can shred as much as will fill their cars and proceeds will directly benefit AWA animals.
“This is a paper shred event that we are doing,” said AWA event coordinator Meggin Olivo. “If you’re clearing out old tax forms from the past before getting ready for your taxes this year, it’s good to get rid of those. People don’t always get the chance to do this throughout the year, so we’re giving them the chance.”
Warmer weather will also mark the beginning of what AWA calls kitten season.

While the four-hour shred event will be full of AWA volunteers, it is unlike others where guests hang out for certain time periods. Instead, the shelter will offer residents an opportunity to donate while easing the shred process.
“We’ll have volunteers to help unload anything; that’s pretty much it,” Olivio noted. “They will let you come into their facility to see the shredding. When people shred paper at home, it’s a tiny little machine. This is on a whole other level. So it’s an interesting process.
“It’s a pretty straightforward event for us.”
AWA will also host a “kitten shower” that is similar to a baby shower but acknowledges the need for AWA to collect donations that will help prepare it for the stress of that time. The kitten shower is also an opportunity to learn proper foster care.
“This kitten shower is twofold,” Olivio explained. “One is to collect the donations of the supplies we will need specifically for these tiny orphan animals … We will also have our foster care and transport coordinator at that event …
“When we get these tiny baby (kittens) in, they need around-the-clock care.”
