Moorestown Lions Club hosts beef and beer

Fundraiser benefits vision and hearing impaired

Special to The Sun: At the Lions Club’s beef and beer, guests will have chances to take home gift baskets such as the ones above by participating in Chinese and silent auctions.

The Moorestown Lions Club will host its 11th annual beef and beer fundraiser on Saturday, March 4, at the Lenola Fire Hall, after a two-year COVID pause.

Proceeds will support nonprofits that include the New Jersey Camp for Blind Children; the Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey; and the Music Association for the Visually Impaired Students of New Jersey (MAVIS), among others.

Lions member Helen Davies-Miramontes described how the idea for the event came to fruition.

“Back in 2010, our president at that time brought the idea into the club because at the time, the only major fundraiser we had was a golf outing, and we realized we had to step up our game,” she recalled. “Each year, it’s grown and grown and grown, so we’ve been very lucky with this event that it’s very popular.”

Davies-Miramontes noted how before events were canceled due to the pandemic, the beef and beer was a success for the club and community.

“There was no talk of shutdown at that point, so from the event standpoint, it wasn’t like we were saying, ‘Well this is going to be touch and go. Maybe it’s on, maybe it’s off.’ And I think for that reason we had such a great turnout.”

The event will include a DJ and Chinese and silent auctions. Over time, Davies-Miramontes has enjoyed seeing how more and more of Moorestown’s residents attend the beef and beer annually.

“I think for me, working with it for so long and helping run it for so long, it’s the satisfaction of seeing how it’s grown,” she maintained. “I think for us, that’s the main goal, to keep it growing, to keep the event going and make sure people come out and have fun.”

The Lions Club also hosts a fundraiser at Topgolf every year and an annual holiday parade. Davies-Miramontes believes that holding the beef–and-beer in March works for everyone.

“Winter is getting over and people are eager to get out and do stuff again, and it spaces our events out so that they’re not all on top of one another,” she said.  “By the time March comes around, people want to get rid of the winter blues and get out and do stuff and have fun. I think for that reason, it’s helped us with the event.”

Davies-Miramontes is proud to see the club work together to make its fundraisers and other events memorable.

“In general, when we look at events, we look at the club,” she pointed out.  “It’s a club effort, and whatever we’re doing is for the benefit of the people we’re trying to help. It’s collective.”

The Lions Club beef and beer begins at 7 p.m. For more information, visit the club’s official Facebook page.
