Rec commission offers tennis and pickleball clinics

Four-day sessions are for beginners on up

The Harrison Township Recreation Commission will hold tennis and pickleball clinics at Ella Harris Park in April and May to emphasize fitness for Mullica Hill residents.

According to the Recreation Coordinator Sharon Chew, clinics for tennis beginners and advanced beginners will be held on four Wednesdays. The clinics will take place on April 5, 12, 19 and 26, with a rain date of May 3. Beginner classes will take place from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and advanced beginner classes from 10:45 a.m. to noon.

Pickleball clinics for beginners are scheduled for Tuesdays, on April 18 and 25, May 2 and 9, with a rain date of May 16. Hours for the sessions are 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The advanced beginner and intermediate pickleball clinics are scheduled for Mondays, on April 17 and 24 and May 1 and 8, with the rain date of May 15.

Advanced beginner clinics will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and intermediate clinics will start immediately after, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

“For the first time this year, we’ve added a senior pickleball clinic for people ages 55 and up,” said Chew. “It will take place the week of May 15 from Monday to Thursday.”

Hours for that session will be 1 to 2 p.m. and equipment is provided.

Registration for the clinics is on a first-come, first-served basis. There are eight slots for pickleball courses and 10 for tennis. Registration is $60 for each pickleball clinic and $75 for each tennis session.

“We’ve had tennis for several years now and this is our third year for pickleball,” said Chew. “The idea came from our instructor, who teaches in other towns. He suggested we add pickleball since it’s up and coming.

“Right now, we use temporary nets for pickleball on our tennis courts, since one tennis court is equal to two pickleball spaces,” she added. “We hope to have pickleball courts added in the future.”

Harrison will also offer open play pickleball at Ella Harris Park from April to August. Hours are 1 to 7 p.m.
