Literacy New Jersey has promoted literacy in the state and Burlington County since 1979, work the nonprofit will continue in 2023 with free U.S. citizenship and Microsoft Word/Excel courses for Palmyra and county residents.
Palmyra posted information for both courses on its website last month: One began on Jan. 9; the other takes place on the 14th. Flyers were also posted throughout the county library system.
County Programs Coordinator Julia Ibragimova is excited to once again bring the programs to the borough and county.
“Our mission is to help the local community residents reach their goals,” said Ibragimova, referring to job opportunities, driver’s licenses or citizenship and GED instruction as services Literacy New Jersey can provide. “We look forward to continuing our work with Palmyra residents as long as they need our service.”
Literacy New Jersey currently offers free services to residents in 12 state counties, including Burlington. The two courses beginning this month last 12 weeks and are offered a few times a year. English classes and one-on-one tutoring are also free and available at all times during the year. The county’s segment of Literacy New Jersey is part of the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program.
“AmeriCorps Seniors’ focus is to make volunteering a part of the American experience by giving seniors 55 and older an opportunity to give back,” Ibragimova noted.
Volunteers trained by Literacy New Jersey teach Word/Excel and U.S. citizenship classes. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer instructor can reach out to Ibragimova for more information; the next phase of tutor training begins on Jan. 25.

Those interested in the citizenship course need a green card to register online; the course itself will take place at Literacy New Jersey’s Burlington County office, 429 John F. Kennedy Way in Willingboro.
