‘What comes in, goes out’

Moorestown Lions Club looks back and forward to 2023

The Moorestown Lions Club held its annual dinner meeting at Sal & Joe’s Spaghetti and Pizza House on Dec. 7, an opportunity for members to review the year’s events and share what’s to come.

“The whole idea is to raise as much as we can so that in June, we give it all out,” said member and former president Pete Thorndike. “When we get to the end of the year, which is June, we have a meeting … and we donate (money) to all these charities that help blind kids.”

Besides helping the visually and hearing impaired, Lions Club objectives include creating and fostering a spirit of understanding among people; taking an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community; encouraging people to serve without personal financial reward; and promoting the principles of good government and good citizenship.

“One hundred percent of what comes in, goes out,” noted Thorndike, a longtime Lions’ member.  “It’s not just blind kids, but the hearing impaired. It’s different charities that help and we donate to them.”

Thorndike has been running the club’s annual Christmas parade for more than 40 years. The Dec. 3 event included floats, marching bands, Girl Scouts, Cub and Boy Scouts, the Burlington County Special Services Band and Santa on his sled.

This year’s theme was Disney on Parade – named for a series of stage shows – and first place in the marching group category went to Girl Scout Troop 20002 for its “Snow White” performance. Second- and third-place prizes went to Girl Scout Troop 26173 and Girl Scout Daisy Troop 24783, respectively. Cub Scout Pack 61 topped the float category with a “Star Wars” theme, taking home that category’s $150 first prize.

Moorestown Eye Associates, Carl’s Shoes, Bayada Home Health Care, The Pie Lady, Carollo’s Restaurant, Moorestown Hardware and other businesses contributed to the event.

Other club events include a Topgolf outing, participation in Moorestown Day and Autumn in Moorestown, Citizen of the Year and the 11th annual beef and beer fundraiser at 7 p.m. on March 4, at the Lenola Fire Hall. All proceeds will benefit the sight and hearing impaired, special needs individuals, youth programs and scholarships.
