Township library offers book club for avid readers

Group gathers to discuss one book each month

The township library now offers a book club that meets once a month and will have its next session on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The club meets for about an hour; the December session will begin at 2 p.m. New members can join by simply showing up at a meeting.

Anyone can join the book club,” said adult services librarian Debbie Drachman, who runs the group, “We read one book per month and meet to discuss the book. We are currently reading ‘War and Me,’ by Faleeha Hassan.”

Hassan is a South Jersey resident who is also scheduled to speak at the library on Jan. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Her book is a memoir about the time she spent as a refugee during the war in Iraq, the country from which she emigrated to the U.S.

At each meeting, the club’s 20 members decide on what book is going to be read next, based on the votes of its members.

“The group decides on its selections based on recommendations I provide,” Drachman explained. “Last month, we read ‘Run Me to Earth,’ by Paul Yoon, a story of three teenagers orphaned in 1960s Laos.”

The township branch is part of the Gloucester County Library System (GCLS); other libraries in that system also host book clubs. There is no registration required to join the township club and participation is free.

The group is geared to adults 18 and up, as the books discussed are made mainly for that age group, according to Drachman.

“We hope to tackle more interesting and diverse literature in the future,” said Drachman.
