‘It’s my turn to give back’

Lions Club golf fundraiser to benefit various causes

The Moorestown Lions Club invites the community to attend its golf outing at Topgolf in Mount Laurel on Nov. 9.

“Last year it was our first try, so there were some little bumps in the road, but you never know your first time until you do it so it went great,” said Ashley Ward, vice president of the club.

This year’s event will feature golf games, a barbecue-style dinner, an open bar and a sports memorabilia auction. All proceeds will benefit the vision and hearing impaired, the community, youth programs and local scholarships.

Ward explained why the club’s mission of helping others is important to her.

“When I was little, I had cancer, so I only have one eye,” she said. “So this is another reason why I joined the club, because it’s close to what I went through when I was young … My dad and uncle built a business here, and generations of my family have had businesses here … So a lot of that money from my charities when I was younger came from Moorestown people.”

“It’s my turn to give back to the community for helping me when I was younger.”

The event will include a 50/50 raffle and silent auction, and golf clubs will be provided.

“We just want to go out there and have some fun, and just bring some money in to help people around here,” Ward noted. “It’s just a good way to help the whole community, to get together.”

Ward shared what she enjoys about being a club member.

“I think it’s because I love Moorestown so much,” she said. “ … My favorite event, out of all this in the whole club, is the (Christmas) parade … I’m excited about Topgolf, but I love Christmas, so the parade is huge for me.”

The club will host its annual beef-and-beer fundraiser on March 4, and Ward looks forward to seeing the community come together.

“I think it’ll be great,” she enthused. “We’re already starting to get things rolling (for the beef and beer) and we’re looking for a good turnout … We’re looking for the best.”

“ … We really are about the community and about helping and raising money for the blind and the deaf, to give them more of a better life and understanding,” Ward pointed out.

“We’re just trying to bring everybody’s spirits up.”
