Township council discussed the work of the Better Together Moorestown Advisory Committee at its meeting on Sept. 26.
Better Together Moorestown is a diverse group of township residents who help protect and celebrate diversity and ensure inclusion among residents, businesses and visitors while also promoting an innovative and informed community.
Council recently passed an ordinance to create the advisory committee, which will advise and assist members, the township manager and other municipal officials. Its purpose is to ensure that cultural, economic and ethnic differences are considered in the township decision-making process.
Eleven regular members will be appointed from diverse backgrounds, with consideration given to ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and the like. At least one committee member must be a Moorestown-based business owner who may or may not reside in the township. At least two members will be residents between the ages of 14 and 19.
The committee will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the township library. Anyone interested in serving is welcome to complete and submit a citizen leadership form through https://moorestown.nj.us no later than Oct. 31, or forward the same to the township clerk at phunt@moorestown.nj.us. All requests will be forwarded to council for consideration.
Another item for discussion at the council meeting was a proposed ordinance to amend Chapter 168 of the township code called Vehicles and Traffic. Council recently became aware that students have been parking on streets located near school properties during the day, causing public-safety concerns, disruption and inconvenience to residents.
“ … It’s addressing the concern about parking in the vicinity of Moorestown High School,” said Township Manager Kevin Aberant. “It’s also addressing the concern about parking in the vicinity of Moorestown Friends School. It’s also addressing parking with commercial vehicles.”
According to the ordinance, overnight parking of commercial vehicles is prohibited, and no commercially registered vehicle with more than four wheels can be parked on any public street, roadway or highway in the township between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Regulatory signs will be erected and maintained to accomplish the designated “Two-Hour Parking 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. School Days.” After discussion, council left the item for introduction at a future meeting.
