API event encourages visits to suffragist’s historic home

Paulsdale Uncorked has been celebrated for 15 years

Proceeds from the Alice Paul Institute’s (API) 15th annual food and wine-tasting event Saturday will help fund the organization’s ongoing effort to promote gender equality in the name of the late suffragist.

Paulsdale Uncorked has been held annually for the last 15 years and this year’s version will take place at Paulsdale, Paul’s childhood home in the township. For the first time in its history, the event will also feature a sponsorship from The Philadelphia Foundation, a century-old community foundation that serves the city and nearby counties and connects people with organizations for purposes of philanthropy.

Heather Lonks Minty, development director for the institute, noted the purpose behind the event is to give residents a chance to visit the historic location of Paul’s birth.

“Only 4 percent of national historic landmarks are dedicated to women, and we are one of them,” she said. “We are the publicly accessible site in New Jersey that honors a woman.”

The 2020 Paulsdale Uncorked event was held virtually due to the pandemic, and attendance  last year was limited by COVID restrictions.

“We’re very lucky that many of our supporters are so dedicated to the organization,” Minty noted. “They still purchased and donated (during COVID) … It’s nice that we’re able to continue the event and hopefully have more people attend this year.”

Cherry Hill-based caterer Details By Ms. Dawn will provide food for the evening, the hours for which are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with a V.I.P. reception at 5. The institute is offering two individual ticket options: general admission at $100 and VIP at $150. The latter includes admission to the VIP reception.

The reception will take place at API’s historic home, where staff will unveil a desk that first belonged to Susan B. Anthony, and then to Paul. The suffragist worked at the desk at the National Woman’s Party headquarters in Washington D.C.
