‘Treasure troves’

All you need is a card to learn about library’s online resources

“Many people don’t know that our library isn’t only books.” So says librarian Michelle Burns, who will help guide patrons through its online resources on Sept. 29.

With a number of digital tools and databases at its disposal, the Deptford library will host an online resource seminar on Thursday, Sept. 29.

“We have a number of really great databases available with just a library card,” said reference librarian Michelle Burns. “We have the traditional research databases like Ebsco, which many people are probably familiar with because that is used in schools, but patrons also have access to Ancestry and HeritageQuest for genealogical research.

“Patrons can also access Health Source and Legal Reference Center,” she added. “We even have Creativebug, which is a collection of crafting tutorials. Our newest database is called Peterson’s Test and Career Prep, and it offers sample tests for SAT, LSAT, GRE, as well as cosmetology, nursing, fireman and other occupational tests.”

Burns herself will be an instructor at the seminar to teach people how to navigate all the tools the library offers, what the library website refers to as “treasure troves.” On top of research, participants can learn how to use various Microsoft Office apps, such as Word and Excel, as well as what Microsoft Windows has to offer.

There will also be tools to help people with career information, such as tips on constructing a good resume and practicing interviewing skills. Students can also search for scholarships and colleges based on their own goals and desires. The library also provides access to newspaper and magazine archives.

September happens to be National Library Card Sign Up Month, and one of the township library’s goals for the online resource seminar is to attract more people who might want library cards.

“Many people don’t know that our library isn’t only books,” Burns noted. “We have so much more to offer our patrons, and this seminar will, hopefully, be informative and might inspire some residents to get or update their library cards. And use them.”

The one-hour seminar will begin at 6:30 p.m.
