Deptford hosted its food truck festival in Fasola Park on Aug. 27 – the township’s last major event for the summer – with Boy Scouts serving their funnel cakes, Kona Ice providing shaved ice to help beat the heat and Potato Patato offering varied tater tots.
Food trucks also provided specialty dishes such as main course meals in the hope of making a name for themselves.
“This is our first year here,” said a worker at Potato Patato. “Hopefully it’s a good day for us.”
“It’s turning out great,” said Mayor Paul Medany that day.
“The weather is beautiful, the park looks great, our guys did a fantastic job getting it ready for all these people,” he added. “We’ll have thousands of people here today, so it’s a great event.” According to Medany after the event, Deptford estimated that 2,500 people passed through the event.
Tables and chairs were set up underneath tents for diners to eat at as they watched a 90-minute performance by the group Pure Petty, a cover band that specializes in music by the late Tom Petty. DJ Lilly also provided music for the event and hosted games, namely a water balloon toss and a scavenger hunt through the park.
“We have our balloon artist, our picture boards, and we have corn hole set up. There’s something here for everybody,” said Medany. “And of course, all the vendors and crafts people. They have great craftsmen here and most of them are local.”
The township council had its own tent set up with information regarding future events and programs, as did the Deptford library. Craftsmen included woodcarvers and sign makers. Businesses like Dream Vacations also promoted their offerings. Candle Bakery, a shop that makes candles to look like dessert treats.
