Richwood church will host its first carnival

Proceeds to benefit Haitian school destroyed by earthquake

In a first, the Richwood United Methodist Church (UMC) will host a carnival for a cause on Labor Day weekend.

“We’re planning games, some free, some for a cost, and those include prizes, contests, dunk tank, food for sale, a huge basket auction, a dessert auction and a free concert by our house band, Sanctified,” church administrator Mildred Herman said of the Sept. 3 event.

“Everyone is welcome.”

The free event’s attendance could be affected by the holiday weekend, Herman noted.

“We’re hoping 200 or so will come, although there’s no way to know,” she said. “And it’s a holiday weekend, so that may help or hurt. We’re not sure.”

The outdoor carnival will have a specific timeline. Opening will be at 1 p.m., when games and other activities will begin. At 3 p.m., Sanctified will take the stage for a concert. The winners of the silent auction will be announced at 3:45 p.m., followed by the dessert auction, and the event will end at 4:30.

“All proceeds will benefit a primary school in Mellier, Haiti, that was devastated years ago by the earthquake and has struggled since then,” Herman said. “Money will help with their rebuilding efforts.”

Mellier, a town located about 30 miles from Port-au-Prince, was severely damaged by the country’s 2010 earthquake, which affected 15,000 primary and 1,500 secondary schools and three universities.

The carnival will take place on Saturday of Labor Day weekend at the church’s Fellowship Hall, 111 Mullica Hill Road. Planners are advising guests to expect warm weather and plan to hydrate properly.
