CHERRY HILL EAST
Tyler Drob, a 2013 graduate of Cherry Hill East and an assistant coach the past few years at the school takes over as head coach. The Cougars went 3-7 last season, but now moving into the Classic Division will have a chance to contend for a title, especially with more than seven starters returning on both sides of the ball. Sr. OL-DT Andrew Watson (6-0, 290) was a first-team all-conference DT with 33 tackles and 12 TFL. Sr. WR-S-P Ethan Haddock (6-1, 160) was a first-team selection as punter. He had four receiving Tds and three INTs. Sr. RB-LB Maurice Sample (5-10, 190) was a second-team RB. He rushed for 551 yards, and 5 Tds and made 24 tackles. Jr. QB Ben Cohen (5-10, 180) was a first-team all-conference selection after throwing for 1,030 yards and 9 Tds. Sr. S Justin Herskowitz (5-10, 170) was a second-team choice after making 62 tackles and 10 TFL Jr. TE-LB Brian Cotter (6-4, 200) had 26 tackles, 3 TFL. Sr. LB Jake Janicki (5-9 190) had 15 tackles. Others who saw action on at least one side of the ball include So. FLORENCE
The Flashes move to the Classic after going 5-4 last season while competing in the Patriot Division. Florence looks to carry the momentum from the end of last season when the Flashes won three of their final four games. Consider them to be a contender. Sr. QB Jake Faigier (6-0, 200) was a second-team All-Patriot choice last season. Sr. RB-CB Jamiel Horne (5-11, 175) and Jr. OL-DL Nick LeVach (5-11, 225) were second-team selections on offense. Jr. WR-LB Darien Woody (5-11, 175) was a first-team choice on D. He led the team in total tackles with more than 100. Sr. RB-WR-LB-P Tyler Brunner (6-0, 190) and Jr. RB-DE Elijah Quinn (6-0, 185) were second-team choices on D. Other key players include Jr. OG-DL Ayberk Tinur (5-10, 205) and Sr. OL-DL Alex Martinez (6-0, 230). Sr. OL Luke Skinner (5-11, 170) is a key returning letter winner. Among key newcomers include So. OL-DL Nick Hiros (6-2, 300), So. OL-DL Sabion Ramos (5-9, 270), Sr. Justin Grover (5-9, 175) and Jr. OG Anthony Neutzman (6-2, 180). Other young players who can contribute are So. RB-LB Damian Ricketts (5-8, 170) So. RB-LB Anthony Hurley (5-8, 170). Coming off injury is Sr. WR-DB Jamar Dowling (6-2, 165). Adding depth are Sr. WR-DE Dante Gardner (5-11, 175) Jr. WR-DB Dylan Oliver (5-11, 145).So. WR Elijah Elijahravenell (5-10, 140) and So. sprint champion WR Barone VanKline (6-0, 140). The backup QB is Jr. John Paul Dunphy (5-11, 155), who will also help at LB.
PALMYRA
The Panthers bounced back well last year. After opening the season with five straight losses, Palmyra won four of its last five during a 4-6 year while competing in the Patriot Division. Now moving to the Classic, the Panthers should be among the contenders. Leading the way is Sr. RB-LB Kwinten Ives (6-3, 190), a first-team all-Patriot selection on offense. At the beginning of July he had received offers from Temple, Connecticut and Stonybrook. Sr. WR-LB Bobby Woll (5-10, 170) was a first-team choice on D. Sr. QB-CB Damon Bailey (6-2, 180) was a second-team choice as a kick returner. Two second-team choices on offense were Sr. WR-CB Adonis Jones (6-0, 170) and Sr. OL-LB Lucas Moritz (6-0, 195). Other returning two-way players are Jr. OL-LB Pat Daly (6-0, 175) and Sr. OL-DL Andrew Riley (6-0, 200). So. OL-DL Stephen Hankey (6-1, 190) is among the returning players who saw action on at least one side of the ball. Hankey was a second-team choice on D. Other returning starters (on at least one side of the ball) include Sr. WR-CB Jaykob Ott (6-0, 180), Sr. WR-CB Austin Forrester (6-1, 175), So. OL-DL Jeremy Skelton (6-0, 200) and Jr. WR-LB Elliot Jackson (5-10, 155). Key returning letter winners include Jr. OL-DL Thomas Sacca (6-2, 220), So. OL-DL Ryan Riley (5-10, 220), So. CB Marcus Grimes (6-1, 175), So. WR-LB John Lattimore (6-2, 190), So. QB-LB Evan Montgomery (6-2, 200), So. OL-DL Stephen Schneider (6-5, 275) and So. OL-DL Jameer Baskerville (6-0, 190). Among newcomers to watch is Fr. RB-DB Michael Monroe (5-5, 106), a true speedster, Jr. OL-DL Wade Clement (6-3, 240) and Jr. WR-CB Azmir Taylor (6-1, 180). Bailey is the projected starter at QB, while Montgomery could see some time there as well.
HOLY CROSS ACADEMY
The Lancers went 2-8 competing in the Patriot Division last year (with two of the losses by a touchdown or less). This season in the Classic, Holy Cross should be much more competitive and could end up contending although the Lancers won’t be the favorite. Sr. RB-WR-LB Ryan Elliott (5-8, 17) was a first-team all-conference kick returner. He had 1,154 all-purpose yards and 14 Tds. Sr. WR-DB Jaylen Peak (5-11, 160) was a second-team choice on D. He also had 21 receptions for 286 yards and 1 TD and 1 INT, 3 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Sr. WR-DE Donovan Fey (6-3, 190) was a second-team choice on D after recording 9 sacks. Players who saw action on at least one side of the ball include Sr. DB Sultan Wilson (5-11, 170), Sr. LB-DT Khari Smith (5-10, 201), Sr. SS-LB Owen Evans (6-1, 160), Sr. OL Alex Updike (5-11, 217), So. OL CJ Pearse (5-10, 260) and So. OL Matt Ewing (5-10, 260). Competing for the QB job will be Jr. QB Colin Ambrosius (5-10, 165), Sr. QB-FS Blake Wadley (6-2, 185) and So. QB Will Updike (5-10, 165). Of the three, Wadley may be the best athlete and if he doesn’t play QB, should be able to help the Lancers somewhere on offense. So. WR-DB Manny Doku (6-3, 170), who didn’t play last season, has been strong in offseason workouts according to Maderia.
HADDON TOWNSHIP
The Hawks remain in the Classic Division, one that has become more challenging. Haddon Township is the only returning member of last year’s Classic Division. Last year Haddon Township went 3-7 and with a tougher schedule, the Hawks would do well to match that record this season. Sr. RB-CB Jairo Padin (5-9, 170) was a second-team all-conference choice on D. He is a four-year varsity performer. Other returning two-way players are Sr. RB-CB Josh Dockery (5-10, 173) and Sr. WR-S Zach Gruber (5-10, 175). Players who saw action on at least one side of the ball include Jr. QB-S Zack Kocher (5-10, 165), Sr. QB-TE-DE Zion Campbell (6-3, 215), Jr. LB Jarius Johnson (5-8, 160), Jr. OL Chris Broderick (5-10, 200) and Jr. LB Danny Knorr (6-1, 200).Among returning letter winners are Jr. RB-S Aidan Alessi (5-10, 167), Jr. RB-LB Nate Swaney (5-9, 165) and Sr. RB-LB Mark McGuire (5-8, 160). Newcomers to watch include Jr. TE-DE Ozzy Olevsky (6-3, 185), So. OT-DT Willem Conover (6-1, 215) and Jr. OG-DT Richie Benito (5-9, 190). Kocher and Campbell have been battling for the QB job in camp. Whoever doesn’t win the job, will find a place somewhere else on offense.
