BORDENTOWN
What a turnaround it has been for Bordentown under Skip Edwards. He took over an 0-10 team and went 5-3 in 2020 and then 10-1 and finished second to Gloucester in the Freedom Division. Once again the Scotties appear to be contenders in the Freedom with a veteran team. Sr. RB-LB Mike Poinsett (5-11, 200) was a first-team all-Freedom choice on D/ He had 93 tackles, 23 TFL and 15 sacks. He also scored 6 Tds as a FB. Jr. TE-LB Brock Schenck (6-1, 210) was a second-team LB after making 57 tackles, 10 TFL and 5 sacks. Jr. QB-WR-DB Myles Hansford (6-0, 170) was a first-team choice as a kick returner. He had 51 tackles, 5 TFL and 2 INTs. Sr. TE-LB Brendan Swanson had 34 tackles and 2 INTs. Leading the players who saw action on at least one side of the ball is Sr. RB Kerry Nicholas (5-9, 180) who rushed for 1,682 yards (14.0 avg.) and 20 touchdowns in earning first-team honors. He was also the Trenton Times Offensive Player of the Year. Sr. QB Denny Morolda (6-1, 195) threw for 398 yards and seven Tds and was honorable mention all-conference. Sr. DB Arion Owes (6-2, 205) had 36 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 forced fumbles and was also an honorable mention choice. Sr. OL-DL Christian Montalvo (5-11, 195) had 63 tackles, 12 TFL, 7 sacks in earning first-team honors. Sr. DE Liyu Chen (6-0, 225) had 41 tackles, 10 TFL, 5 sacks and was second-team All-Freedom. Two other second-team choices were Sr. OG Jason Smith (6-0, 275) and Sr. OT Brian Cruz-Torres (5-11, 215). Another key returning starter is Sr. C John Manion (5-10, 175). Sr. K-P Eliot Robinson (6-2, 175) was 3-5 on FG, 50-52 on PATs and averaged 39 yards punting. Some of the newcomers to watch include Sr. OL-DL John Acosta (6-0, 187), Sr. OL-DL Messiah Alexander (5-9, 245), Sr. FB-LB Isiah Florence (6-2, 170), Sr. DE Chris Packard (6-1, 185), Jr. OL-DL Will Jacobs (6-4, 210), Jr. RB-LB Jaden Spirito (5-9, 175), Jr. DB Jack White (5-11, 160), So OL-DL Sean Crilly (6-0, 185) and So. WR-DB Ari Miller (6-0, 170).
MAPLE SHADE
The Wildcats are on a certified roll. Last season’s 6-4 record marked the fourth consecutive winning season. The only other time there were four consecutive winning seasons was 1975-78. A fifth straight winning campaign is a viable goal and the Wildcats could be a contender in this balanced division. Sr. QB-DB Nate Veasey (5-7. 170) was a first-team all-conference choice on offense. Sr. RB-LB Sean Loomis (6-0, 205) was a second-team choice on offense. Sr. WR-DB Thomas Kalimouris (5-10, 175) and Sr. OL-LB Mick Mulcahy (5-10, 215) were first-team choices on D. The other returning two-way player is Sr. WR-DB AJ Cintron (5-9, 170). Players who were starters on at least one side of the ball are Sr. WR-DB Austin Miller (5-7, 160), Jr. TE-LB Ryan Mulcahy (5-10, 180), Sr. OL-DL Deven Barrientos (6-2, 250) and Jr. OL-DL Eddie Nusslein (6-2, 265). Barrientos was an honorable mention all-conference selection. Among key newcomers are Sr. Jamir Stewart (5-7, 210) and Fr. Aaron Wells (5-6, 140). What position both play is still to be determined but coach Imion Powell says both are expected to be contributors this season.
PEMBERTON
The Hornets were 1-9 competing in the WJFL Independence Division, but return several key players so improvement is likely. In fact, nobody in this division, including Pemberton can be discounted from contending. Sr. ATH-DB Gabe Rivera (5-10, 160) was second-team all-conference as a DB and punter. He had 27 receptions for 391 yards and 1 TD and rushed for 122 yards (7.6 avg.) and recorded 17 tackles. Sr. RB-LB Elijah Zapata Smalls (6-0, 185) was second-team all-conference on offense. He rushed for 478 yards (3.9 avg.) and 4 Tds. Jr. FB-LB Riley Stidham (5-7, 150) was a second-team choice on D after recording 52 tackles. Sr. WR-DB Nyair Williams (6-0, 180) was honorable mention all-conference. He had 14 receptions for 167 yards and 2 Tds. Others who saw action on both side of the ball include Sr. TE-DE Joseph Pressley (6-7, 190), Sr. OL-DL Taevon Barber (5-8, 215), Jr. Ol-DL Conner Pittman (6-0, 275) and Jr. RB-LB Zion Grissom (6-0, 160), who had 26 tackles. Among promising newcomers are So. FB-LB Shaun Lake (5-10, 160) and So. OL-DL Yuhann Linares (5-10, 200).
CINNAMINSON
After a strong run, the Pirates slumped to 2-8 last season. Now moving to the Freedom, with an experienced team, the Pirates could contend for the division title. Sr. QB-DB Jack Zarnawski (5-10, 175) completed 55-89 for 523 and one TD. He also rushed for 404 yards and 8 Tds on 136 carries. Jr. RB-LB Brian Finnerty (5-9. 170) rushed for 325 yards (3.6 avg.) and 3 Tds. Jr. RB-DB Kyle Willis (5-7, 150) rushed for 442 yards (5.6 avg.) and 5 Tds. Sr. WR-DB Adam Horner (6-2, 180) had 22 receptions for 260 yards. Other returning veterans include Jr.WR-LB Michael Beers (6-1, 175), Sr. OG-DT Malicah Etienne (6-5, 245), Sr. WR-DB Pat Ghegan (5-8, 160), Sr. WR-LB Ryan Hess (6-0. 190), Sr. OL-DL Josh Neel (6-3, 240), Sr. C-LB Isaiah Ruiz (5-10, 200) and Sr. OL-DL Lexander Santiago (5-10, 225). Players who saw action on at least one side of the ball include Jr. RB-DE Immanuel Brown (5-9, 185), Sr. C-LB Jack Kane (5-10, 180),Sr. OL-DE Kevin Tanczak (6-0. 190) Jr. WR-DB Anthony Udotong (5-9, 180) and Sr. OL-DLColton Urwiler (5-10, 210). Promising newcomers include so. RB-DB Tyaler Palladino (5-9, 150), Jr. TE-DE VictorMeira (5-10, 210) and Jr. OL-DL Caine Block (5-10, 240).
BURLINGTON CITY
The Blue Devils did relatively well to go 4-6 last season, especially since Ray Robinson resigned as head coach right before training camp and was replaced by Kadin Booker. Couple that with the fact that Burlington City didn’t play in 2020 due to COVID and the season was a success with a relatively young team. Burlington City qualified for a South Jersey Group 1 berth before losing to Shore in the first round. Now led by some talented skill position players, Burlington City looks to improve and while not the favorite, could be among the many expected challengers for the division title. One of the keys is the development of a talented freshman class, several who could be immediate contributors. Sr. WR-DB Aaron Young (6-1, 180) was a first-team All-Patriot choice. He had 42 receptions for 753 yards and 11 Tds, while rushing for 250 yards and 3 Tds. Jr. QB-DB Ayden Shausey (6-3, 175) was also a first-team choice after passing for 1,200 yards and 13 Tds and rushing for 506 yards and six scores. Other two-way performers include Jr. OL-P-PK Spencer Ostner (6-2, 210) and Jr. RB-LB Hashim Cooper (6-1, 205). Others who saw action on at least one side of the ball are Jr. OL-DL Laron Fisher (5-9, 280), So. OL-DL Jason Brown (6-2, 250) and Sr. OL-DL Amire Harris (6-0, 200). Key returning letter winners include Sr. WR-DB Synja Purkett (6-1, 170), Jr. WR-DB Ethan Daniels (6-0, 170), So. OL-DL Alijah Young (5-9, 185) and So. RB-DB Inez McNair (5-8, 175). Fr. ATH Dymear Hill (5-8, 150) is expected to be used all over the field, including backup QB. Jr. TE-LB Nazir King (6-3, 205) is a transfer from Beckley High in West Virginia, who should help on both sides of the ball. Other key newcomer are Fr TE-LB Caleb Ingram-Hilton (6-0, 185), Fr. WR-DB Dave Raiford (5-7, 150), Fr. RB-DB Malachi Sadler (5-8, 150), Jr. TE-DE Wayne North (6-2, 180) and Jr. WR-DB Malachi James (6-0, 185).
NEW EGYPT
The Warriors went 8-3 and finished second in the Classic Division by the slightest of margins. New Egypt went 4-1 in the Classic, the only loss a 3-0 defeat to Overbrook, which won the title with a 5-0 mark. This is a team that was hit hard by graduation, but should be competitive in the Freedom, just not among the favorites. Sr. WR-DE Devin Kimmiick (6-3, 220) was an honorable mention all-conference choice. He caught 10 passes for 170 yards and 3 Tds. Sr. OL-DE Andrew Taber (6-1, 195) was a second-team choice on offense. Sr. WR-DB Gavin Morrow (5-7, 155) was a second-team choice on defense. Sr. RB-DB Anthony Raucci (5-9, 170) rushed for 126 yards (4.5 avg.). Sr. OL Gio Larocca (6-0. 190) is another returning starter. So. QB Caleb Kowaleski is projected to be the starter. A newcomer to watch is Fr. WR-S Lucas Burgos (5-10, 170)
