WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP
It was a breakout season for Washington Township last year. The Minutemen went 6-3 earning their first winning season since 2015. They earned a SJ Group 5 playoff berth, losing to Lenape, 24-21 in the first round. Coach Michael Schatzman has this program going in the right direction and with an experienced team back, the Minutemen look to contend in the Continental. Sr. TE-DE Jason DiBlasio (6-1, 220) was a second-team all-conference choice on D and one of four returning two-way starters. DiBlasio had 40 tackles. Sr. WR-DB Michael Lotsey (5-9, 170) had 26 tackles and 1 INT. Jr. RB-DB Logan Perez (6-0, 190) rushed for 181 yards (4.8 avg.) and 1 TD. Another returning two-way player is Sr. OL-DL Nathan Leone (5-11, 225). Sr. OL John Stone (6-4, 280) was a first-team all-conference choice. He is a Rutgers commit. Another first-team choice was Jr. QB Jared Dziergowski (6-0, 195). Dziergowski threw for 510 yards and 5 Tds and rushed for 613 yards (6.3 avg.) and 10 scores. Others who saw action on at least one side of the ball are Sr. OL Michael Lackore (6-3, 235), Sr. WR Matt Bonsall (5-11, 175), Sr. DB John Williams (6-1, 190), Sr. FB Michael Tomasetti (5-10, 195), and Sr. OL Dante Moore (6-3, 235). Key returning letter winners include Sr. LB Logan Brown (5-10, 190), Jr. LB Gabe Mosco (5-11, 190), Jr. RB-LB Giuliano Scavetta (5-10, 180) and Sr. DE Colin Woodward (6-0, 215). Sr. OL Gerald Lanoza (6-0, 235) returns to Washington Township after attending Paul VI as a junior. Two other key newcomers are So. WR-RB-DB Da-Shawn Long (6-0, 170), who played on the freshman and JV and saw varsity time on special teams, and Jr. RB-LB Giulano Scavetta (5-10, 180), who was a standout on the JV and also played special teams on varsity.
HOLY SPIRIT
If ever there were a team with a deceptive record, it was last year’s 5-6 Holy Spirit squad that advanced to the Non-Public B state semifinal before losing to DePaul, 28-14. Three of the losses were to eventual sectional champions, including a 7-6 defeat to undefeated Cedar Creek, the SJ Group 3 champ. Holy Spirit now has Andrew DiPasquale taking over as head coach after AJ Russo resigned following last season. After competing in the WJFL Memorial, the Spartans have the ability to contend in the Continental, but won’t be the favorite. Sr. OL-DL Robert McDevitt (6-0, 210) was a first-team all-conference selection on D after recording 10 sacks. Sr. RB-WR-DB Gavin Roman (5-9, 165) earned second-team honors on offense after rushing for 509 yards and 5 Tds while adding 174 receiving yards and 2 scores. Another key returning two-way player is Sr. WR-DL Jayden Llanos (6-3, 185). Sr. QB Sean Burns (6-1, 185) looks to be the QB this season. He saw action at a variety of positions last year, including QB toward the end of the season. Other players who saw action on at least one side of the ball are Jr. LB Nolan Bradley (6-0, 175), Sr. DE Sean Finan (5-9, 165), Sr. OL Jayson Lewis (6-0, 235), Sr. OL Luc Louis (6-0, 225), So. H-back-LB Nick Medina (6-0, 195) and So. PK Mason Forte (5-9 170), a first-team all-conference selection. He made 2-3 FG and 29-33 PATs. Among key newcomers who played JV last season are So. RB-LB Jahcere Ward (5-9, 210), Jr. WR-DB Tahmir Jones (6-0, 165) and So. OL-DL Jackson Broschard (6-0-225).
VINELAND
The Fighting Clan were 2-10 while competing in South Jersey’s toughest division, the WJFL American. While the American remains the top division, coming to the Continental will provide plenty of challenges. The hope is that the experience gained by the young players will lead to improvement, especially with such a strong junior class. So. QB-LB Daniel Russo (6-0, 200), son of coach Dan Russo, enjoyed a strong debut season. He completed 93-149 passes for 729 yards and six touchdowns. Russo also rushed for 499 yards and 7 Tds on 144 carries, while playing two games at LB. He earned honorable mention all-conference honors on offense. Jr. WR James Hitchens (6-2, 175) caught 18 passes for 271 yards and 2 TDs. So. WR Zha’Vian Diaz (5-9, 140) had five receptions for 103 yards. Other returning veterans on offense are Jr. OL Patrick Gilbert (6-2, 315), Jr. OL Jameson Blanding (6-7, 310), Jr. TE Charles Burt (6-1, 210) and Jr. PK Collin Graiff (5-11, 165). Leading the veterans returning on D is Sr. DE Emmanuel Doivilus (6-5, 250), who had 85 tackles and earned second-team honors. William & Mary and Howard have offered Doivilus. Jr. DT Sabyan Chandler (6-3, 265) added 44 tackles. Sr. DB DJ Clark (5-11, 175) had 32 tackles. Sr. DT Julio Garcia (6-0, 205) had 16 tackles. Jr. LB Tayshun Newman (6-2, 215) had 19 tackles. CLEARVIEW
The Pioneers move over from the Royal Division. They went 6-5 and earned a CJ Group 4 playoff win. Now Stephen Duncan takes over for a Clearview team that won’t be listed among the favorites, but looks to be competitive in a highly difficult division. The strength of the team is in trenches on both sides of the ball. Sr. OL-DL Nick Oliviera (6-5, 285) was a first-team all-conference choice on offense. He is a Cincinnati commit. Jr. OT-DL Matt Chincillo (6-2, 250) was a second-team choice on offense. Players who saw action on at least one side of the ball include Sr. OG-DL Mark Mattaluci (5-9, 200), Sr. WR-CB Aidan Flake (6-2, 180), Sr. WR-FS Mark Grubb (6-2, 180), Sr. RB-LB Gavin O’Connor (5-8, 165), Sr. OG-DL Carter Palmer (5-10, 190), Sr. C-DL Evan Munholland (5-10, 240), Sr. RB-DB Noah Colon (5-10, 165), Sr. RB-DB Anthony Baldino (5-7, 165), Jr. RB-DB O’brian Brown (5-8, 175) and Sr. TE-DE Brandon Thurston (6-2, 175). Among promising newcomers are So. QB-LB Tyler Dell (6-2, 175), So. RB-DB Sean Ralph (6-2, 175), So. RB-LB AJ Salerno (5-9, 180), So. WR-DB Billy Neumann (5-11, 175), So.
