ST. AUGUSTINE
The Hermits were arguably the top team in South Jersey last year. They finished 9-2, advancing to the semifinals in state Non-Public A. St. Augustine was 8-0 against teams from the seven-county South Jersey area. With a number of top graduated players to replace, the Hermits have many more questions coming into this year, but they still should contend in the American Division. And any team that wins the American would likely be in the running for the top team in South Jersey. Most of the experience returns on defense, which should be ahead of the offense in the early going. Sr. DE Terrin Walker (6-3, 200), is a third-year varsity player who had 14 tackles and 2 sacks. Jr. RB-S Tristan McIeer (5-10, 170) had 69 tackles and 6 passes defensed. Sr. LB Christian Collot (6-3, 225) had 51 tackles, 8 TFL. Sr. WR-DB Nacir Christmas (6-2, 175) had 32 tackles. Sr. TE-NT Rob Adamson (6-1, 280) had 48 tackles, 13 TFL. Sr. K-P Brandon Bispo (6-0, 155) was 3-4 on FG’s and had 40 PATs. Other veterans include Sr. OT Noah Cressman (6-5, 300); Sr. OT Kevin Quinn (6-5, 290), Jr. OG-DL Vince Isom (6-1, 270), and Sr. OL-DL Asher Jenkins (6-1, 210). Others challenging for starting spots include Sr. RB-DB Nadir Bethume (5-7, 150), Sr. RB-CB Noah Gridnich (5-8, 155), Jr. OG-DL Ezekial Rameriz (5-10, 280), Sr. WR Connor Hughes (6-0, 165), So. LB Julian Giambuzzi (5-9, 177), So. LB Matt Bonczek (5-9, 193) Jr. WR Matt Castle and Jr. WR-DB Jake Meyers (5-11, 175). The main challengers at QB are expected to be Jr. Ryan Gambill (6-3, 190) and So. Rori Friel (6-3, 170). One other note: the Hermits have a freshman class of 35 that head coach Pete Lancetta and his staff are excited about.
SHAWNEE
Shawnee continues to produce winning seasons and last year was no exception. Owner of nine sectional titles, Shawnee went 8-4 and a earned trip to the CJ Group 4 final before losing to Winslow Township, 34-22. The key for this year’s team is replacing four-year starter Matt Welsey at QB. Now at Kutztown, Welsey threw for 23 Tds and rushed for 20 more last season. Sr. OL-DE Jackson Ray Harris (6-2, 255) was a first-team all-conference choice on D after recording 32 tackles. Sr. K-P Darren Wu (5-11, 170) was a first-team choice as a punter and also converted 2 of 3 field goals and 49-50 PATs. Sr. WR-DB Ethan Krauss (6-1, 190) was honorable mention on D. He had 54 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and 1 INT. Sr. DE Billy O’Byrne (6-6, 215) had 40 tackles and 5 sacks. Sr. LB Sam Beamer (5-11, 185) had 79 tackles. Sr. LB Josh Peluse (5-10, 200) had 102 tackles. Sr. LB Jimmy Potter (5-9, 175) added 28 tackles. Sr. WR-LB Oskar Heino (6-2, 207) had 21 tackles. Other key veterans include Jr. DB Michael Pierson (6-0, 192), Jr. DB Jack Conners (6-0, 188), Sr. RB Ryan Budzynski (6-0, 175), Jr. TE Liam Gilmore (6-3, 220), Sr. C Jack Welsh (6-0, 215), Sr. OT Dan Emerle (6-3, 235), Jr. QB-LB Joe Papa (6-1, 195), Jr. NG Andrew Johnson (6-1,218), Jr. DT Eric Bill (6-0, 227) and Jr. DT Dan Scullion (6-2, 235). Papa appears to be the frontrunner for the QB job. Key returning letter winners include Sr. TE Timmy Simons (6-4, 195), Sr. DT Andrew Abbott (5-11, 210), Sr. WR Tanner Grabowski (6-4, 185), Sr. OT Nate Kavanaugh (6-3, 270), Sr. DT Caden Mobley-McHenry (6-0, 240), Sr. OT Brennen Polaski (6-2, 233), Sr. WR Alex Rea (6-0, 155), Sr. RB Alex Ricci (5-7, 150), Sr. LB Zach Roe (5-9, 175), Jr. OT Jarred Kelly (6-2, 290), Jr. LB Dan Pettit (5-10, 180), Jr. DE Jake Pfeifer (6-3, 195), Jr. RB Ben Rickards (5-11, 185), Jr. LB Nick Rusinski (5-1, 185) and Jr. OT Sean Stoughton (6-0, 228). Among key newcomers are So. OL Andrew Prol (6-4, 232), So. OL John Prokapus (6-3, 238), So. OL Jake Thomas (6-2, 258), So. LB Lorenzo Gordon (6-3, 210), So. LB Mason Grabowski (6-1, 185) and So. OG Cole McCarthy (6-0, 215).
WILLIAMSTOWN
The Braves went 5-6 while also winning a playoff game. Included was a victory over SJ Group 5 champ Kingsway. The biggest detriment Williamstown is facing is playing one of the toughest schedules in South Jersey. If the Braves can approach six wins with this schedule, it would be quite an accomplishment. Replacing Turner Inge, who rushed for 1,606 yards and 15 Tds and had 123 tackles, will be a key for Williamstown. The Braves have three returning two-way players, Jr. QB-RB-S Zach Zerbe (6-0, 185), Sr. WR-SS Sean Gallagher (5-10, 160) and Sr. RB-CB Julian Noel (5-9, 165), an honorable mention all-conference selection, who had 43 tackles and 1 INT. In five games Zerbe rushed for 350 yards (5.8 avg.) and 6 TDS. He also completed 12-28 passes for 150 yards and added 15 tackles. Sr. OG-DT Keishon Patterson (6-1, 300) was a first-team choice on offense and Sr. H-BACK/LB Mason Brown (6-0, 220) was a first-team choice on D. Brown had 92 tackles, 11 TFL and 7 sacks. So. QB Drew Craig (5-8, 145) completed 29-53 passes for 341 yards and 2 Tds. Other returning veterans include Sr. D Tyler Byrd (6-0, 245), Sr. OG Ashton Kopa (5-9, 205), Sr. WR-FS Anthony Lanteigne (5-11, 150), Jr. WR-LB-DE Jordon Foley (6-2, 165), Jr. RB-CB Harold Hill (6-0, 175), Jr. C-DT Dominic Malinski (5-8, 250), So. LB Jaxon Colbert (5-9, 180), So. OT-DT Jordan Gravener (6-0, 270), So. H-BACK/LB Nolan Lloyd (5-9, 200) and So. RB-CB Raymond Wade (5-9, 155). Two key newcomers are Sr. OL-DL Michael Manages (6-2, 250) and Sr. WR-S Lamier McLaughlin (6-1, 205).
LENAPE
The Indians had been on quite a roll until last season when they went 3-8. The seven years prior to last season Lenape was 59-16, so last season, where injuries hit, was seen as an aberration. Despite the graduation of many seniors, this is a team that appears ready to post a winning record and challenge for a playoff berth. Returning two-way starters are Sr. OL-DL AJ Gola (6-3, 260) and Sr. FB-LB Ty Smith (5-9, 180). Jr. DB Michael LeMay (5-9, 170) was an honorable-mention all-conference selection. Jr. RB-LB Riley Rodriguez (5-10, 180) rushed for 118 yards and 2 Tds and also completed 8-15 passes for 113 yards and 2 Tds. He also had 23 tackles. Sr. DB Jay Best (6-0, 185) had 28 tackles. Others who saw action on at least one side of the ball are Sr. OL-DL Matt Nasielski (6-2, 240), Sr. LB Nagei Ringo (5-9, 185), Jr. OL-DL Michael Citerone (5-11, 265) and Sr. WR Cole Galyao (5-9, 175). One of the key newcomers is Sr. RB Zyaire Goffney-Fleming (5-10, 195) who had great success two years ago at Haddon Heights and is a transfer from Camden. Jr. QB Jaelim Mims (5-10, 175) is a transfer from Highland who will seriously battle for the No. 1 spot.
