Summer activities for all ages at Deptford library

From manga to board games, there's something for everyone this summer

If you’re looking for indoor summer activities for all age groups, look no farther: The Deptford Public Library has plenty in store.

Activities will include reading programs and book clubs for different age groups. In-person registration for the preschool through seventh grade program continues through June.

For teens 12 through 17, a manga club will be held every other Thursday starting on June 30. (Manga are comics or graphic novels that originate in Japan.) There will also be young adult board game days on Tuesdays at 1 p.m.

“These programs are for kids who are too young to have jobs, but too old for story times,” said Reference Librarian Michelle Burns. “Those kids in the middle need something constructive to do with their summers, and we want them to come hang out in the library.”

Adults can enjoy a new library book club that started in May. There will be a meeting to discuss this month’s title, “The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls, on June 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Other activities at the library this summer include an ice cream party with a balloonist on June 24 and kite day on July 12. A fire-safety demonstration and fire truck tours will be hosted by the township fire department on Aug. 3.

The Friends of the Deptford Library, a community based nonprofit that addresses the needs of the township facility, will continue its support of the discovery program this summer, with five museum passes patrons can check out and use free.

“We have passes for the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia, Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center in Millville, the Mount Cuba Center in Delaware, Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford and our own Museum of American History in Deptford,” Burns said.

“Each pass has its own restrictions, and information is available at the library.”

All dates and times for programs are on the Deptford library’s website at deptfordpubliclibrary.org/calendar/month. Residents are encouraged to follow the facility’s Instagram page (@dpllibrarylady) for updates on program dates and times.

“As it did everywhere else, the pandemic slowed things to a crawl here at the library,” Burns noted, “and we are looking forward to people coming back to use our resources and reengage with each other as a community.”
