Perkins center hosts series of summer concerts.

Moorestown’s Perkins Center for the Arts’ lawn-chair concert series is back in full swing, with two shows happening this month.

All Tuned Up will take the stage June 13 with its band leader George Bittner, also a drum teacher at Perkins. Bryan Williams, conservatory manager for the arts center, explained that the band plays a variety of music from different decades.

“They cover a wide range of styles and we like to bring in those types of acts that will provide a little bit of something for anyone,” he said. “So, if your everyday person comes, they will be able to appreciate and enjoy the concert.

“Anyone in the community should be able to come to these concerts and find something that they enjoy,” Williams added, “and that’s kind of our goal with the concerts.”

The Golden Eagle Band, an all-volunteer community group based in South Jersey, will be the first to play in the concert series.

“They’re going to be performing a wide variety of repertoire for wind ensembles,” Williams noted. “ … They play rock, pop, jazz, adult contemporary –  anything you can pretty much think of.”

Beverly Pugh Corry, a musician and flute instructor at Perkins, incorporates storytelling and engagement in her shows.

“ … Sometimes (it’s) folk tales, sometimes older stories that are child-friendly,  where she has students mimic the characters in the stories on flute and she usually brings a couple of her students up with her,” Williams explained.

All of Perkins’ summer concerts will be held on Evergreen Lawn adjacent to the gallery.

“We do encourage everyone to bring their own lawn chairs; that’s a big part of it,” Williams said. “ … You can bring a picnic for yourself and your family … It ends up being a very family friendly event.”

Perkins is also gearing up to host its indie night concert series in July with original music from area bands with different styles. The center continued its summer concerts despite the pandemic.

“In August of 2020, we did (do) a lawn chair-concert (series) and everyone was in masks,” he noted. “Everyone was 6 feet apart on that big lawn, and it actually worked out really well.”

Williams himself looks forward to seeing the Golden Eagle Band.

“We’ve never had a giant wind ensemble as part of this series … ” he said. “So  it’ll be interesting to hear that and hear them do it at a high level, because I hear that they’re very good.”
