Art Studio of Deptford starts winter session of adult classes

Subjects include calligraphy, watercolors and jewelry-making

The Art Studio of Deptford has started its winter session classes with a range of artistic experiences through the week of March 28.

Graphic artist Maureen Peters will teach classes at the studio – also known as Letterworks Art Studio – by using her 40 years of expertise in calligraphy and pen-and-ink renderings.

While used to bringing her own materials to classes at local libraries in the region, Peters got a more established space courtesy of the township.

“Mayor Paul Medany and the township council gave me the opportunity to be in one place to host all the classes I was teaching and give other artists the opportunity to teach what they love in a beautiful and creative place” she said.

Since the pandemic, Peters has wanted to start an art center for Deptford, which led to the creation of a summer art camp for children 7 and up. With its great success, she started an afterschool art program and classes for adults and seniors every weekday.

The afterschool programs include one for children that will continue on Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. through June.

“It’s a place you can get messy, share with others and then leave the mess,” Peters said.

Other seasonal studio classes are for adults, with each day of the week focusing on a different art form. On Monday, residents can explore calligraphy for beginners, with Peters teaching modern script in both upper and lowercase. Tuesday will feature bookmaking and binding.

Wednesday classes are beginner jewelry-making sessions that teach residents how to make necklaces and earrings by utilizing a range of techniques and materials. Thursday is an open studio day, and Fridays focuses on watercolor for beginners.

All classes are from 6 to 8 p.m. at the studio with the exception of Thursday classes, which run from 12:30 to 2 p.m. For more information on pricing and registration, visit letterworksartstudio.com.

“I hope that the Art Studio at Deptford will become a place of learning, being calm with lots of inspiration to create wherever your heart leads,” Peters said.
