The Clearview school district’s board of education met on Jan. 27 to review a student assessment presentation by its director of curriculum and instruction.

Sherry McAteer noted how the growth of after-school tutoring programs, summer programs, mental-health services and other initiatives seems to correlate with growth in student academic success.

“Enhancing the level of social/emotional services to our students [is] extremely important during a pandemic,” said Superintendent John Horchak. “Some services are provided directly to students, while others are built into the school culture. The social/emotional experiences are not always related to academics, but they often define the high-school culture.”

Little Pioneers daycare tuition rates for the 2022-’23 school year were approved at the meeting. The cost for a full five days a week totals $575 a month, a three- day option is $345 and a two-day choice is $230.

The board also approved the purchase of 20 new passenger school buses for nearly $73,000 and accepted a donation of about $1,600 from the classes of 1963 and 1964 to help fund beautification projects at the high school.

A new book club was approved for the high school that will allow for more in-depth discussions of readings by students in English classes. And while there were adjustments and changes made to the spring athletic schedule, Horchak looks forward to bringing back pre-COVID traditions.

“We continue to strive to provide our students with an experience that replicates the pre-pandemic high school-experience,” he noted. “To that end, the annual senior trip to Disney is scheduled to occur in the fourth week of March.”

The board selected 14 faculty members to be chaperones for the trip, with four alternates on standby.

Before adjourning, the board recognized four security drills in the district during December, including two fire drills, one lockdown drill and one shelter-in-place drill.

The next Clearview board of education meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m.
