The Medford Township board of education held its reorganization meeting on Jan 5 and gave a hearty welcome to the new superintendent of schools.
Keira Scussa received a standing ovation at the meeting from the board and public. She replaced Joseph Del Rossi, who retired just before the new year.
As a 42 year member of the Medford Township community, Scussa has gone through township schools herself, paving the way for her own three children to follow in her footsteps. As a local parent and now a valued employee in the district, Scussa explained how the role allows her to see things through different lenses.
She told the Sun that before she was appointed superintendent, she reflected on how Medford schools are her biggest source of pride.
“When I go back to what the biggest source of pride is, it’s our Medford Township Family,” she said “So then, I thanked them for this enormous responsibility and I promised to make every decision with the best interest of kids at heart.”
Scussa also noted what the school community can look forward to in the near future.
“We are a great district that is going to transition to awesome very quickly, and I’m confident we have the team to do that,” she said. “A lot of new people but a lot of new ideas.”
As for the ongoing pandemic and the recent end to winter break, Scussa told the Sun there is currently no plan for the schools to switch from in person to remote learning.
“Right now, we are continuing to focus on keeping our schools open and keeping everyone healthy and safe,” she added.
Other board members sworn in at the meeting include:
- Chad Fires and Andrea Jornick will serve three year terms.
- Board member Jeffrey Wagner was reelected to a three year term and fellow member Angela Zografos was reelected to a two year term
