Berlin Borough held its annual reorganization meeting on Jan. 5, a session that was intended to be in person before a spike in COVID cases forced it to go virtual.

The brief meeting saw the swearing in of two current council members, Patricia Cummings and Jake Miller, both of whom were joined virtually by their families. Council then offered remarks on the upcoming year.

Cummings is hopeful for change despite the challenges Berlin faced in 2021.

“Even though this was a difficult year, I thank everyone again,” she said. “I’m sure everything going forward will get much better, but I look forward to a great year. Everyone is working really hard together to make our town a better place.”

Miller also offered thanks for his position.

“I thank the residents and everyone who voted for me to be in the position again,” he said. “I promise to work hard and diligently to make sure that every department I am  a part of is given the utmost attention.

“I have never met a harder-working group of people, and it goes to show for the town that we have today,” Miller added, referring to council. “I look forward to the next three years serving this community.”

Council President Jim Pierce, reelected to his position unanimously, also spoke.

“I just want to say how awesome it is to work with this entire team; it has been an honor to have served Berlin Borough for all of these years,” he said. “I would like to continue to do so,”

Mayor Rick Miller thanked his staff and township department workers for serving alongside him.

“I want to thank this whole staff and all of the department heads who run the town on a day-to-day basis,’’ he noted. “It’s been a challenge these last two years but they come to work every day with a smile on their face.”

Miller hopes for a return to in person meetings soon.

“Happy 2022, but finally, I have to thank everyone for their flexibility and adapting to the times and doing this meeting on Zoom,” he said. “Hopefully it’s the last one for the year and forever.”
