Moorestown’s 2022 Running and Walking Challenge

All are welcome to explore Moorestown’s different parks, trails and streets.

CHRISTINE HARKINSON/The Sun: Residents can explore Moorestown’s parks and trails by participating in the recreation department’s 2022 Running and Walking Challenge. Above are the Play Pals at Strawbridge Lake.

The Moorestown Department of Parks & Recreation is offering a new exercise program this January for people of all fitness levels – those trying to get into shape, those already in shape, and those who simply enjoy running and walking. One program fits all with the first “Moorestown Running & Walking Challenge” (MRWC).

MRWC is a 12-month program that will take people through Moorestown’s streets, sports venues, parks, and trails. Each month, three ‘segments’ will be released online that can be walked or run. The segments will be of varying lengths – short segments (½ mile or less) or long segments (1 mile or more) and a trail/park segment located in one of our township parks or preserves. People can join at any time throughout the year.

To keep it interesting, there will be a competitive aspect to the program. Participants will have their mileage and times tracked with the help of the Strava app and awards will be presented to top performers. Registration is $20 for the year through the Parks & Rec website, www.moorestownrec.com

The MRWC website, www.2022MRWC.com, gives full details on the program with helpful videos, maps of the segments and links to the Strava MRWC club where you can view current results (more than 50 people are already enrolled!)

This program is completely customizable – how many segments are completed, the pace, and the involvement of technology are all determined by you. For tech-savvy people, link your wearable device (Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Watch, etc.) to the app or for those less techy, just walk or run with your smartphone.

Do you want to win the monthly challenges – for speed or segments completed? Or do you want to aim to finish one segment a month? It’s entirely up to you. The best part is exploring the town and visiting places you may have just driven by for years.

Jason Weber is the brainchild of this program and Rich Corbin from Parks & Recreation is administering the program. Jason and Randhy Rodriguez have kindly volunteered their time and talents to produce a promo video for the program as well as a video showing the January segments.

This program could provide just the structure you need to get moving in 2022. Take the Challenge – www.2022MRWC.com.
