Letter to The Editor: Margo M. Foster

Township resident encourages the use of mulch doughnuts around tree trunks.

To the Editor,

Yes, we all treasure our trees. But please remind homeowners, landscapers, and public works staff that mulch “volcanoes” are harmful to trees.

Instead, provide mulch “doughnuts” of two-to-three-inch thickness around tree trunks to provide a visual border and protection from mowers. However, do not let the mulch touch the trunk of the tree; that leads to bark rot.

Look up “mulch volcanos” online for further information.
