Deptford Mall ‘pop up’ offers family events for Christmas season

Activities include character nights and a kids’ mini theater

As the holiday season nears, the Deptford Mall has already introduced the Holiday HQ at center court outside Macy’s first floor indoor entrance.

The festive pop-up has been open since Nov. 12 for children and families to visit and take photos with Santa. Guests can choose a socially distant or more personalized experience, but visits are free and photo packages can be purchased.

Animals also can be photographed with Santa on three Mondays: Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. Reservations are available on the Deptford Mall website, and only cats and dogs are allowed.

Special character nights will be held each Wednesday in December, with the likes of Elf on the Shelf and the Grinch. Holiday crafts and giveaways will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. on those nights and reservations are recommended.

A sensor-friendly meeting with Santa will be available from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12 for all ages and abilities and with no sensory triggers like lights, music or crowds. Registration is available on the mall website.

Outside of the Holiday HQ, family friendly activities can be found at the mall’s Kids Mini Theater. On Thursday, Dec. 16, with showtimes at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon, a pajama party with Mrs. Claus will feature snacks, holiday crafts, story time, caroling and giveaways. A photo opportunity with Mrs. Claus will be offered and the event is free. Registration will begin on Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. on the mall website and seating is limited.

Deptford residents also are prepping for upcoming seasonal events considered tradition among many families.

“Our Christmas tree-lighting ceremony will be held on Friday evening, Dec. 3, followed by our senior winter wonderland on Thursday, Dec. 16,” Mayor Paul Medany wrote in his November monthly message. “Be sure to check for more upcoming events on our website.”
