Woman’s Club of Medford announces new scholarship

Award for a female will be worth $500 for education after high school

The Woman’s Club of Medford announces a new $500 scholarship for a female who wants to continue her education at a college or trade school.

The Woman’s Club of Medford has announced a new scholarship that will benefit a post high-school female applicant who wants to pursue some kind of education, including college or trade school.

A club committee met virtually on Oct. 28 and announced the $500 award, which has yet to be named. Seven members of the scholarship committee, including Chair Karen Monaghan,  noted the award is the second scholarship from the woman’s club.

The club already awards the annual Alice Mietz scholarship, for a female high-school student in the 08055 zip code who wants to further her education after graduation. The club has yet to release some details of the new scholarship, but did announce it would require applicant essays. The winner will be chosen in the fall of 2022 and the award announced that December.

Monaghan said the award is meant to shed light on the support of women at all stages of their lives.

“The woman’s club is trying not only obviously helping women to empower women, to strengthen women, to give women resources that will do that, and one (that) is identified and has for a long time, (supported) high-school seniors going to college,” Monaghan explained.

Club co-President Kathy Cullen said the group wants the new award to emphasize the importance of older women getting a chance to further themselves. The scholarship will get financial support from the club’s yearly fundraisers.
