Mantua’s Truck or Treat event teaches kids about fire safety

Vehicles from various municipalities were on hand

Mantua Township’s Truck or Treat event at Chestnut Branch Park on Oct. 28 was  an opportunity to stress fire safety.

Fire trucks from multiple towns that included Mantua and Woodbury lined up on the park’s courts. A historic vehicle from the local fire and EMS museum was also showcased, an opportunity for kids to ring its old fashioned bell. Volunteer firefighters gave out candy, plastic fire helmets and coloring books to children in Halloween costumes.

Other businesses distributed treats as well, including Car Effex; the Girl Scouts of Central and South Jersey; and Saint Francis Veterinary Care, whose table had a prize wheel for families to test their luck.

The main wow factor of the event was the smoke coming from a fire safety simulator. This pop up station helped families understand the necessary steps to take when evacuating their homes or rooms during a fire.

A K-9 demonstration also took place at the free event, and donations of food items benefitted the Hunger Food Drive on site.

Halloween trick-or-treating hours for Mantua Township were from 3 to 8 p.m.
