Gloucester Twp Police Dept. provide update to investigation of hit and run crash involving pedestrian

On Friday, Oct. 22 the driver of the striking vehicle turned himself in to Gloucester Township Police.

The following release is by the Gloucester Township Police Department.

On Friday, Oct. 22 the driver of the striking vehicle turned himself in to Gloucester Township Police. He was arrested and charged with the following: Assault by Auto (4th degree), Knowingly leaving the scene of a Motor vehicle crash resulting in serious bodily injury (3rd degree) and Endangering an injured victim (3rd degree). He was processed and remanded to the Camden County Correctional facility.
Arrest: Celio Roberto Desouza- Age 40, 180 Block of Providence Forge Road Royersford, PA
The striking vehicle was located and secured to be processed for evidence.

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2021 at approximately 3:59 p.m. the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the area of the 1900 Block of Sicklerville Road for a report of a pedestrian motor vehicle crash where the striking vehicle fled the scene, leaving the victim with serious bodily injuries. Passing motorists stayed with the victim until the arrival of Police, Fire and EMS. Once the victim was stabilized they were transported to Cooper Hospital by EMS with serious injuries to the lower body and is listed in critical condition.
Sicklerville Road was closed for approximately two and a half hours during the initial stages of the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and being handled by the Gloucester Township Serious Crash Investigation Team (SCIT). The name of the victim is not being release at this time.
Witnesses to the crash described the striking vehicle as a white Ford work truck/van with Pennsylvania Registration driven by a White or Hispanic male with dark hair and beard. The vehicle had a ladder rack and enclosed cargo area with “Reading Ready Van” on the side. The suspect vehicle may also be missing the passenger side mirror and have passenger side front end damage. It was last observed on Sicklerville Road crossing southbound over Berlin Cross Keys Road.
