Three Deptford Township High School senior cadets participated in the Northeast Regional Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Course (NJROTC) leadership development course known as the Area Four Senior Leadership School (A4SLS). A4SLS is an annual virtual training opportunity for Navy JROTC cadets who will be serving in top leadership roles in their program in the coming year.
Deptford Cadets Gisselle Diaz (Company Commander), Gracie Hollywood (Executive Officer) and Chloe Thomes (Command Senior Enlisted) participated in a week program covering topics including the challenges of small unit leadership, planning and risk management, human resources management (fitness, sexual harassment, bullying, hazing, fraternization), being an administrator and teamwork.
“At Leadership School, I learned that different other schools run their companies very differently, but their methods still work,” Diaz said. “This training has proven to be very realistic and what was learned I will be able to apply it at school.”
Guest speakers included a retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, an Active Duty Navy Captain and a retired Marine Corps Colonel.
Deptford Township School District’s NJROTC Naval Science Instructor, retired Sr. Chief Petty Officer Franco Colamarco, who has been instructing our students in the district for over 17 years, also dedicated his time for the week-long course by teaching leadership to over 160 top cadets from across the northern east coast.
“It is such an honor to be selected by the program’s leadership to teach the top selected cadets from the northeast, he said. “The tools our Deptford cadets gathered during the week of training will not only prepare them to lead our unit, but prepare the three with skills they may take with them beyond high school.”
The DTHS NJROTC Program is a Citizenship Development Program of the Deptford Township School District and the Naval Service Training Command.
