Gloucester Township celebrates 325th anniversary with time capsule

In the past few months, the township has invited local groups and organizations like the American Legion, fire companies, women’s clubs and Little League-baseball organizations to submit items of significance and a group photo to be buried and unearthed 50 years from now, in 2070. The only requirement is that the items need to fit in a gallon-size Ziplock bag.

“We want to celebrate our history, but also 50 years from now, we want people to understand what we’re about: investing in our youth, our sports, our arts, programs in town, how the town is developing and evolving,” said Mayor David Mayer.

“It’s a way to cherish what we have and build upon who we are moving forward.”

The mayor noted that among time capsule items is a book describing the town’s history from 1695 to the ‘90s. While there were originally plans to hold a parade and attempt  a Guinness World Record for longest bucket chain, uncertainty surrounding COVID prevented them from happening.

“The COVID pandemic certainly is first and foremost right now in our lives, and we have to make sure that the future generation understands that that’s what we were going through at this point in time,” Mayer reflected. “But still, there is great hope in moving our community forward.”

The township has been collecting items since July, and in the upcoming days, the capsule will be sealed and moved to Gabreil Daveis Tavern. The burial event will begin at 1 p.m. Members of area organizations will speak, and there will be a general celebration for the town.
