Release courtesy of the Moorestown Dept. of Parks & Recreation:

The deadline for registering for fall youth soccer leagues is soon. Don’t miss out on this great sport – there are play opportunities for boys and girls as young as pre-K all the way through sixth grade. Rec sport leagues are designed to be fun, inclusive and to build good sportsmanship. Learn the sport, become part of a team and don’t worry too much about the score.

All soccer leagues run from September 18 through October 30. Matches will be played at either Wesley Bishop Field or Jeff Young Memorial Park. Each team will have a one-hour, refereed match. Feel like a pro on the turf fields at Wesley Bishop or get some mud in your cleats at Jeff Young Memorial Park. It’s a great way to kick off the weekend and get some fresh air and exercise.

The addition this year of 3 Lions Soccer Academy will greatly add to the development of skills and strategies. Their expert staff will provide coaching and drills during team practices (scheduled during the week by each coach.) Paul Wimbleton, a former professional soccer player from England, founded the academy in 2000. Hundreds of the academy’s players have gone on to play collegiate soccer.

The program for four and five-year-olds (children not attending kindergarten in the fall) will be co-ed. This league plays at Wesley Bishop Park on Saturdays from 1-4pm. Each team will have a 75-minute slot to develop basic soccer skills and concepts and play short scrimmages. The other leagues are separate for boys and girls (rising grades for fall 2021).

Registration for girl’s field hockey clinics and leagues will also be closing soon. On Sundays starting September 19 for six weeks, girl’s leagues for grades one and two and grades three and four will play from 12:30-2pm at Wesley Bishop Fields. These are instructional and fun leagues, no separate practices required.

Older girls in grades five and six will participate in a limited travel league in the South Jersey Field Hockey League. And girls in grades seven and eight will play in the competitive travel league, South Jersey Youth Hockey League. Participants for this league must have experience in the sport and be Moorestown residents.

There are two field hockey clinics – one for grades three and four on Wednesday nights, 5-6pm that runs concurrently with the league. There is also an introduction to the sport for kindergarten girls for six weeks on Wednesday from 5-6pm starting mid-September.
