Board of commissioners grants final approval to parking ordinance

Governing body makes changes to meeting schedule through end of year.

If residents and visitors want to patronize shops and eateries along one section of north Haddon Avenue in the borough’s northwestern quadrant, they’re going to have to move quickly.

During its Aug. 16 public session, the board of commissioners gave unanimous final approval to an ordinance that reduces parking to a 15-minute time limit on the eastern side of the main thoroughfare, in a space starting 20 feet from its intersection with Wayne Avenue and proceeding 45 feet northward toward its intersection with Ardmore Avenue.

The restrictions are set for all hours on all days.

“This specifically places 15-minute parking in front of the new Bread Board location on Haddon Avenue,” said Mayor Colleen Bianco Bezich.

Commissioners approved a first reading of the legislation during their previous open session on July 19. The ordinance will take effect immediately, pending publication that is required by law.

Also required by passage of the legislation is a new meeting schedule for the board  through the end of the calendar year. Per the affirmation of all three commissioners, there will be one work session and one open public meeting from September through December.

In recent years, commissioners gathered for two open public meetings per month on Tuesday evenings during the months of February, March, April, May, June, September and October, and one open public meeting per month in January, July, August, November and December.

“SInce the three of us are so focused on efficiency and action, we have decided to move from a four meeting per month schedule to a two meeting per month schedule,” the mayor noted.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 13, and continuing through December, commissioners will hold work sessions the second Monday of every month; on the fourth Monday of every month, members will discuss action items.

Work sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m., while business meetings will start at 7:30 p.m. The public will be able to attend and to participate at all future meetings.

“This will give us some more time between meetings to attack the action items we all have, and be more effective moving forward,” Bezich explained.

In other news:

  • Commissioners formally recognized and gave an ovation to Mario Iavicoli for his four decades of service to Haddonfield as borough solicitor. During the meeting, Bezich revealed that Iavicoli submitted his resignation and retirement, effective the end of August. Iavicoli stepped into the role of solicitor in September 1980,  under then-mayor Ted van den Beemt. He then served with Jack Tarditi (1981-’97), Gene Kain (1997-2001), Tish Colombi (2001-’13), Jeff Kasko (2013-’17) and Neal Rochford (2017-’21). In September 2019, Iavicoli was the recipient of a proclamation in his honor that declared Sept. 24 of that year Mario Iavicoli Day in Haddonfield.
  • Subsequent to Iavicoli’s announcement, the governing body awarded a contract regarding the solicitor position to Siciliano and Associates of Haddonfield. The borough based firm will serve that role from Sept. 1 through through Aug. 31, 2022, for $17,500.
  • The bid for work on the Haddonfield Public Library enclosure improvement project went to Joseph Porretta Builders Inc. of Hammonton, for a total of $63,642.
