Mayor’s Column: National Night Out

Mayor Michael Mignogna explains the history of the annual event.

Voorhees Township will be celebrating our Sixth National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Connolly Park. Last year’s celebration was canceled for health concerns, but we are happy to bring back this popular event celebrated by police forces internationally.

Meet the Voorhees police officers, K-9 units, firefighters, EMT’s, drug and alcohol educators, domestic violence advocates and numerous other public service providers. Join us for carnival attractions, games, food and more. Target will have a sidewalk chalk art area, Creative Motions will be doing line dancing again and the deejay for the event will be our own Officer Justin Sims.

The evening’s activities are sponsored by Hardenbergh Insurance Group, J-Dogs, Rita’s Water Ice, Piskai Orthodontics, Mr. Softee, Police & Fire Federal Credit Union, AAA, Target, Echelon Health & Fitness and the Voorhees Citizens Event Foundation. We thank them for their generosity.

National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that started in 1984 and promotes police community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, striving to make our neighborhoods a safer and better place in which to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while encouraging a sense of community and providing a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together.

Citizens, law enforcement agencies, community groups, businesses, youth organizations and local, state, and federal officials take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases worldwide. In 2019, over 38 million people participated in National Night Out.

The best way to prevent crime is to know your neighbors and your surroundings. National Night Out triumphs over a culture that isolates us from each other and allows us to rediscover our own communities.
