Obituary: David H. Russell, Sr.

Russell was a Haddonfield native, served his country in Korea and became an educator.

David Russell of Westmont, formerly of Haddonfield and Pitman, died on June 26 at the age of 92.

He was the beloved husband of Jean (nee Gabriel) and the late Dorothy (nee James); Loving father of David H. Jr. (Brenda) of Pitman and  stepfather of John Stanton (Johanna) of Collingswood, Amy Mulford of Voorhees and Alisyn Stoffel of Haddonfield, the cherished grandfather of Kristy, Stephanie and Juliann Russell, step-grandfather of Chelsea Stanton and the late Brooke Mulford, as well as the dear brother of Dorothy Evans of Haddonfield.

David graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in the class of 1946 and received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the Philadelphia office and then attained a teaching certification from Glassboro Teacher’s College.

David then taught in Magnolia Public Schools for 33 years, which gave him much satisfaction. David loved the Philadelphia sports teams, had a special interest in writing and possessed a sense of humor appreciated by many. He believed in being “true blue,” loving towards all people and that there are “no bad apples, just folks with confused thinking.” David was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield.

David’s family will greet friends on Friday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Avenue, Haddonfield. His Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
