Mt. Laurel council addressed two proclamations and cited the accomplishments of two Girl Scouts at its virtual session on April 26.
Members congratulated Tanya Das and Savana LaRocca for attaining the Girl Scout Gold Award and completing their Scout projects.
“I’d like to thank the Mt. Laurel Town Council, mayor, and board for the honor they have bestowed upon me today,” said Das. “I’d also like to acknowledge that my Girl Scout silver and gold project would not have been possible without the phenomenal support that the Mount Laurel school district gave me.”
Das completed a service project called In Spirit, which stands for innovation and natural scientific pursuit of independent research in technology. With the project, Das’ goal is to have underserved students innovate solutions for cleaning marine debris. She designed an experimental curriculum for ocean science and underwater robotics and highlighted her concept at an international workshop that more than 450 students attended, and where they built and used remotely operated vehicles to remove river debris.
Scout Savana LaRocca completed a service project to educate her community on childhood obesity, with a PowerPoint presentation to her high school and the community about its causes, prevention, and management options.
In other business, the council addressed comments from Mt. Laurel resident Sharon Kaufman, who expressed her disappointment that Ramblewood Swim Club would not open this summer.
“I started a petition on Change.org, which currently has 359 supporters, and the point of the petition was to show support for the Ramblewood Country Club,” Kaufman said. “Just to show that the community really supported opening the Ramblewood pool.”
Township Manager and Clerk Meredith Tomczyk responded to Kaufman by letting her know the township has met with a solicitor who will consult with Kaufman and Mayor Stephen Steglik.
“He’s going to go over what legal obligations the township has when it comes to the pool,” Tomczyk explained. “He did provide a detailed opinion on what the buffers have to base for. That letter was sent late tonight to our township engineer, who will go out and do an inspection.”
In other news:
- Council approved motion 21-R-91 to transfer the ownership of the retiring police dog Gunner.
- Members also approved resolution 21-R-92, authorizing a soil removal permit for The Gables of Mount Laurel complex.
- Ordinance 2021-10 had a second reading and public hearing. It amends part of the code on qualifications for police department hires.
- Ordinance 2021-11 was approved to authorize a short-term lease that will allow volunteers to clean, maintain and upgrade the building formerly known as Discovery Museum at Paws Farm.
