Obituary: Dr. Marcel “Bob” Schulmann

Dr. Marcel “Bob” Schulmann passed away in New Providence on Jan. 20 at the age of 94. Marcel was deeply loved by all, with his infectious smile and tenderness for his family, friends and patients.

Marcel was born in Germany in 1926 but spent his early life in Florence, Italy. As a teenager, when the Germans invaded Italy, he joined the Italian Resistance. After the war, he earned his MD at the University of Florence. During this time, he also worked as a radio broadcaster. Marcel moved to the United States in 1952 and completed his internship at the French Hospital in New York and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Temple University. He later served as Chief of Orthopedics at Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly. Besides being an excellent surgeon, the thing his patients remembered most about him was his gentle and caring bedside manner.

Marcel was happily married for 57 years to his beloved wife Simone, from Aix-en-Provence. The couple met during their medical internships in New York and spent many years in Moorestown and Marco Island, Fla. They loved classical music, Long Beach Island, traveling and playing bridge. Marcel was a loving and caring father and grandfather; he was an advisor, caregiver and hand to hold when anyone needed him.

Marcel is survived by his three children: George Schulmann and wife Michelle, Diana Glendinning and husband John, and Marie Schulmann. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Courtney Pantle and husband Nick, Maria Schulmann, Julia Metzler, and Dylan and Michael Glendinning.

The family will gather privately. A memorial service is planned for later in the spring. Donations may be made to the “Lantern Hill Staff Appreciation Fund at: 535 Mountain Avenue, New Providence, New Jersey 07974. For further information, please visit www.bradleyfuneralhomes.com.
