Medford encourages residents to recycle Christmas trees

The trees can be donated to local farms and zoos to help animals like goats and big cats

The Department of Neighborhood Services will begin collecting Christmas trees on Monday, Jan. 25. Collection will take place over a two week period and will end on Friday, Feb. 5th.  Residents should place their trees at the street on their designated trash collection day with all stands, ornaments, and lights removed. Residents who cannot wait for Christmas Tree Collection may bring their tree to the DPW yard during regular business hours.

Trees that are flocked or treated with artificial snow cannot be recycled and should be brought to the DPW yard during regular hours. The DPW yard is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and every third Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; excluding holidays.

You may also consider donating your tree to a farm where it will be used to feed animals or provide natural shelter.

Goats enjoy feeding on pine trees which are also a natural de-wormer. Local zoos use the trees as scratching posts and activities for big cats such as lions. The trees should be free of any tinsel, flocking, pesticides or ornaments.
