Parks & Rec. encourages locals to explore their own town

By Amy Filippone, Dept. of Parks & Recreation

Looking for some family winter fun? The Moorestown Parks & Recreation Department has just the thing. Back by popular demand, there will be another Treasure Hunt on Saturday, Dec. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a great way for friends and family to social distance and learn about our culturally rich town. Bundle up and get ready to test your knowledge of Moorestown history.

Moorestown was settled in the 1680s and has been home to many distinguished men and women. This treasure hunt promises to give a more meaning to some of the buildings and locations we pass everyday. Who built them and why?

This is a free program, but registration is required. The first clue will be emailed to all participants the morning of the Dec. 19. The course of nine clues will take approximately an hour and a half to complete. Learn about inventors and business magnates who called Moorestown home. Some last names may ring a bell and others may not. If this one doesn’t — Samuel Leeds Allen (it’s a clue to the theme of the treasure hunt), learn about the inventor and his contribution to the lives of many smiling, thrill-seeking children every winter for more than 130 years.

The charming, rhyming clues will weave treasure hunters through town and educate along the way. Each site will offer the next clue and include a short history of the significance of the location just discovered. Make sure to have a camera phone at the ready to capture your journey.

There will be a small gift bag at the last site for all finishers. The six-hour window of time will minimize large groups of people, and it’s a great way to celebrate the holidays as well as the beauty and history of Moorestown.

So come out and create your own family history! Visit www.moorestownrec.com and register under “Free Programs.”
