Letters to the Editor: HMHS Class of 2022 student council speaks on matters of race and community

Four Council representatives and class delegates back donation to Philadelphia chapter of Black Lives Matter.

Dear Editor,

We recently had the privilege of being featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer for our work related to the junior class fundraising efforts. We want to ensure that the focus remains on our mission: support of social justice efforts by our town, and the creation of a community that is supportive and welcoming to all.

For those who may not be aware, each year each class of Haddonfield Memorial High School selects an organization for which to raise funds during spirit week. This year, Black Lives Matter Philly was selected as the organization the junior class would support. This decision was discussed at the school board meeting on Nov. 12.

We acknowledge that Haddonfield has a history of race-related issues. We appreciate the support from the community, the school administration, and school board in our selection of BLM Philly. We see this experience as an opportunity for Haddonfield to write a new chapter in its history.

BLM Philly is a project sponsored by the Movement Alliance Project which is a federally registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization based in Philadelphia. BLM Philly has no political affiliations and is committed to using the donations raised by the HMHS junior class to support African American teachers, students, and communities in Philadelphia with supplies during these hard times. Their goal is educational equity, and they aim to provide opportunities for Black youth in Philadelphia.

If you are interested in donating to Black Lives Matter, you may send a check to Haddonfield Memorial High School made out to HMHS Class of 2022, attention Rachel Gould, or, you can donate online at https://blmphilly.wedid.it/  and indicate HMHS Class of 2022 in the comments section so that your donation is counted towards our fundraising efforts.

Sincerely,

Lily Cheatham, junior class president

Ellie Johnson, junior class vice president

Bella Carle, junior class secretary

Billy Impagliazzo, junior class treasurer

Junior Class Delegates: Jane Kinney, Mia Gagliardi, Emily Gramigna,  TJ Smith, Olivia Ball, Grace Crutchfield, Jack Eyles, Grace Ann McGrath, Marisol Russo, Genevieve Decencio, Kyle Smart, Caden Balkey, Grace Zappetti, Juliet Walls, Kate Testa.
