Mayor’s Message: Thanksgiving during COVID

This year, more than ever, we should patronize our small local businesses the entire shopping season

“This is not the year to get everything you want.

This is the year to appreciate everything you have.”   –  Anonymous

This year, Thanksgiving might look a little different for your family.  We have confronted an invisible enemy unlike any we have ever seen.  Our community has faced sickness, loneliness and loss of precious lives.  More than ever, we will embrace and appreciate our families this Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving has become the unofficial start to the holiday season.  Businesses typically look forward to the following day which has become known as “Black Friday,” when retailers have traditionally gone from being unprofitable or “in the red” to be profitable or “in the black.”  More importantly, the Saturday after Thanksgiving in Voorhees has come to be known as “Small Business Saturday.”  This year, more than ever, we should patronize our small local businesses the entire shopping season.

Even in a pandemic, Thanksgiving should remain a holiday focused on food, family and gratitude.  This year, it is also a holiday of hope.

On behalf of the Township Committee, have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

** The pandemic will impact some of our traditional holiday events in our community.  Our holiday tree lighting and Santa’s arrival will be done remotely, and our Fire Department’s “Cookies with Santa” will resume next year.  However, our tradition of “Santa Around Town” on a fire truck will continue on Dec. 4, 5, 11 and 12.  Specific days and times for particular areas of town will be announced soon.

** Visit Santa at the Voorhees Town Center from Dec. 3 through Christmas Eve.  Masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.  Reservations to visit Santa are strongly encouraged.  Walk-up visits will be available as space allows throughout the day.  Pet visits will not be available this year.  For more information, visit www.whereissanta.com/newjersey/voorheestowncenter.
